Study Abroad: A new option has emerged for science students aspiring to study abroad. After completing two years of study at IISER Tirupati, students will have the opportunity to pursue their education at the University of Melbourne in Australia. Upon completion of the course, students will be awarded two degrees.

Study Abroad: There is good news for science students dreaming of studying abroad. The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Tirupati, and the University of Melbourne, Australia, have launched a new four-year dual-degree program. Under this initiative, students will spend two years studying in India and the subsequent two years in Australia. Upon completion of the program, they will receive a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree from both institutions. The program was launched on October 12, 2026, at the Melbourne Global Centre in New Delhi.

What is the 2+2 Dual-Degree Program?

A key feature of this program is that students are not required to spend all four years abroad. The first two years of study will take place at IISER Tirupati. Subsequently, students who meet the prescribed academic requirements will travel to Australia to complete their third and fourth years. This allows students to begin their education at an Indian institution while also gaining international academic experience. According to the Director of IISER Tirupati, this model may result in lower total costs compared to spending all four years studying abroad. However, it is advisable to verify details regarding program fees and other expenses through official documentation.

What are the Admission Requirements?

Entrance Examination: Admission will not be conducted through the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT); a separate entrance examination is planned for this program.
Number of Seats: It is expected that approximately 50 students will be admitted into the inaugural batch. The final number will depend on the applications received.
Minimum Marks: To be eligible to move to Melbourne after the first two years of study, students must secure at least 70 percent marks or an equivalent CGPA.
English Language Proficiency: Students must meet the prescribed standards in IELTS, TOEFL, or an equivalent recognized English proficiency test.
Other Conditions: It is also mandatory to fulfill the eligibility criteria specific to the respective course.
Application Information: Please keep checking the official websites of both institutions for detailed information regarding application dates, fees, and entrance examinations.

Fields of Study

Students will have the option to study in eight science-related disciplines, including Biotechnology, Chemistry, Ecosystem Science, Environmental Science, Food Science, Genetics, Physics, and Plant Science. Students enrolled in the course will also be part of the 'Science Global Scholars Program,' which will provide them with opportunities to engage in research and international academic activities. Furthermore, students will also be eligible to apply for a Master’s degree.

Similar Options at Other Universities

Students aspiring to study abroad may also explore other '2+2' programs. A similar dual-degree program in science is available between Manipal University Jaipur and the University of Melbourne. Additionally, Nirma University offers pathways for further study at universities in the United States, Canada, and Australia for certain disciplines, including Computer Science and Engineering. Please note that eligibility criteria, fees, and admission requirements for the foreign institutions may vary for each program.
