Only 5.67% of schools in the country offer education from Class 1 to 12: Government.

A total of 1,466,682 schools are registered in the country under UDISE+ 2025-26. Of these, only 83,185 schools offer education from Class 1 to Class 12 within a single institution.

The number of schools in the country where students can complete their education from Class 1 to Class 12 at one institution is quite low. According to data released by the Ministry of Education, out of the total 1,466,682 schools, only 83,185 offer classes ranging from Class 1 to Class 12. This means that only 5.67 percent of schools in the country provide continuous education from the primary level to the senior secondary level. Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State for Education, presented these figures in the Rajya Sabha. The question regarding these statistics focused on institutions providing continuous schooling and the impact this has on students changing schools, continuing their education, and dropout rates. The data also revealed that most students have to move from one school to another to progress through the different stages of school education.

Only 83,000 out of 14.66 lakh schools offer education from Class 1 to 12

A total of 1,466,682 schools are registered in the country under UDISE+ 2025-26. Of these, only 83,185 schools offer education from Class 1 to Class 12 within a single institution. This accounts for merely 5.67 percent of the total schools. This implies that in more than 94 percent of the country's schools, students do not have the facility to complete their entire education from Class 1 to Class 12 in a single school; they may have to seek admission in a different institution at various academic stages.

Improvement in Transition Rates Despite School Changes

Data released by the government reveals an improvement in student transition rates between different levels of school education. The transition rate from the preparatory stage to middle school rose from 92.2% in 2024-25 to 93.8% in 2025-26. Similarly, the transition rate for students moving from middle school to the secondary level also increased, rising from 86.6% in 2024-25 to 88.3% in 2025-26.

Increased Retention and Reduced Dropouts at the Secondary Level

According to the data, student retention—meaning the rate at which students continue their education—has improved at the secondary level. This rate rose from 47.2% in 2024-25 to 51.9% in 2025-26. A decline in the dropout rate at the secondary level was also recorded during this period; the dropout rate fell from 8.2% in 2024-25 to 7.0% in 2025-26.

Approval for Upgrading 1,617 Schools Since 2018-19

Data presented in the Rajya Sabha also provided details regarding the upgrading of schools to expand access to education up to the senior secondary level. Between 2018-19 and 2026-27, approval was granted to upgrade 1,617 secondary schools to the senior secondary level. Rajasthan received approval for the highest number of upgrades, with 606 schools, followed by Odisha (331 schools) and Punjab (241 schools). Additionally, approvals were granted to upgrade 98 schools in Uttar Pradesh, 47 in Assam, and 43 in Karnataka to the senior secondary level. In addition, approval has been granted to upgrade schools in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Jammu & Kashmir, Nagaland, Ladakh, and Arunachal Pradesh.
