Many are curious about who the NTA chairman is and how the appointment is made. Let us explain who holds this position, the appointment process, and the salary involved.

What is the NTA, and why is it so important?

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is an autonomous body that conducts the country's major entrance examinations. It was established to develop a transparent, fair, and technology-driven examination system for admissions into higher educational institutions. The NTA conducts various national-level exams for admission to medical, engineering, and university programs. These include exams such as NEET-UG, JEE Main, CUET, and UGC-NET. The future of millions of students hinges on these examinations every year.

Who is the current NTA Chairman?

Currently, retired Professor Pradeep Kumar Joshi serves as the NTA Chairman; the Ministry of Education entrusted him with this responsibility in August 2023. Prior to this role, Pradeep Kumar Joshi served as the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). He has also held the position of Chairman for the Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh Public Service Commissions. He was given the responsibility of the NTA due to his extensive experience in the fields of education and administration. Originally from Almora, Uttarakhand, Pradeep Kumar Joshi completed his education in Kanpur. He began his career as a teacher and later held several senior positions in universities and various government institutions. After extensive experience in educational administration, he served as the UPSC Chairman and was subsequently appointed as the Chairman of the NTA in August 2023.

How is the NTA Chairman appointed?

The NTA Chairman is appointed by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Typically, this position is filled by a distinguished expert from the education sector or a senior administrator with experience in managing large institutions. The NTA is governed by a body led by a Chairperson, while the Director General oversees the agency's day-to-day administrative and executive operations. This post is usually held by a senior IAS officer.

What is the salary at the NTA?

In a recent response to an RTI query, the NTA stated that information regarding the salaries of its senior officials and total salary expenditure was not available in the requested format; consequently, the agency did not disclose full details of the other officials' salaries. However, salary records from August 2023 indicate that the monthly gross salary of the NTA Director General was approximately ₹3.08 lakh at that time. Meanwhile, the monthly salary of a Senior NTA Director was around ₹3.35 lakh, and that of Director-level officials ranged from approximately ₹2.18 lakh to ₹2.27 lakh per month.
