NTA Answer Key: NTA clarifies the ₹200 fee—money will be refunded for valid objections; will all students benefit?

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has clarified the process for raising objections against answer keys. The agency stated that the system for challenging answer keys is designed to be fair to all students. According to the NTA, if a valid objection raised by a single student is accepted, the revised answer key applies to all students who took that exam. In other words, an objection raised by one student can benefit lakhs of examinees.

What is the NTA answer key challenge?
The answer key challenge is an online process. After the provisional answer key for an exam is released, if a student identifies an error in a question or its answer, they can file an objection following the prescribed procedure. This system is used for exams such as JEE Main, NEET, and UGC-NET. The NTA stated that the objective of this process is to rectify incorrect answers and ensure fair evaluation for all students.

Why is a fee of ₹200 charged?
The NTA stated that a fee of ₹200 is charged for objecting to each question. According to the agency, this fee is not intended to generate revenue from students but to deter frivolous objections lacking a solid basis. If a student's challenge is found to be valid and subject experts accept the objection, the ₹200 fee is refunded. Thus, the student who raises a valid objection does not ultimately bear the financial burden.

How does one student's objection benefit everyone?
According to the NTA, if a student challenges the answer key for a question and subject experts uphold that challenge, the revised answer key is not limited to that student alone; it applies to all students who appeared for the exam. This means that if an incorrect answer appears in the official answer key, a single valid objection can lead to its correction. This prevents the results of a large number of examinees from being adversely affected.

Why is the NTA already facing scrutiny?
The NTA has issued this clarification at a time when the agency is facing questions regarding several examinations. Questions have been raised regarding the NTA's functioning in the wake of issues such as the NEET-UG paper leak and errors in the UGC-NET examination. Amidst this atmosphere, concerns were also voiced by candidates regarding the answer key challenge process and the associated fees. The agency has now clarified that the system for accepting valid objections operates in the best interest of all students.
