Notes and books are best for homework…Where should students use AI? Understand the formula for smart studying..

In the last two years, the trend of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create notes or complete homework has increased in schools and colleges across the country. Students are using AI tools like ChatGPT, Grok, and Gemini to do their homework, assignments, and even take notes. Initially, teachers were surprised, but now they are worried. This is because students who are easily scoring 90-95% marks are only managing to score 60-65% in the final exams. Relying solely on AI for notes can be detrimental in exams. However, students can use AI for certain tasks.

Information revealed in a survey
A recent survey revealed that 68% of 11th and 12th-grade students are using AI to complete their homework at least three times a week. In rural areas, this figure has reached 42%. Experts say that when you don't think for yourself, write in your own words, or conduct your own research, the concepts don't register in your mind. AI gives you answers to questions, but in exams or real life, when the same question is presented in a slightly different way, you'll get stuck. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are diminished.

Using AI for homework...teachers can even fail you.
If you develop the habit of asking AI every question, your brain becomes lazy. After a few months, even thinking for yourself becomes difficult. AI still often provides incorrect information, for example, in history, some science topics, and math problems. AI detection tools have become very common in schools and colleges. If homework or assignments are found to be entirely created using AI, teachers can fail the student.

Creativity suffers
When we make notes ourselves, we write them in our own words. We also draw diagrams in our answers. All of this creates a mental map in our brains, which helps us remember the topic properly. This doesn't happen when using AI for homework or notes, and even repeated attempts to memorize the topic fail. Excessive use of AI also leads to a decline in writing skills, which becomes evident during exams. Here's how you can use AI:
If you don't understand a topic even after reading about it in a book, you can ask AI for help.

If you're repeatedly getting a math, physics, or chemistry problem wrong and can't understand why, you can ask AI for a step-by-step solution.

You can create revision notes for each topic with the help of AI. However, try to rewrite the revision notes created by AI in your own words at least once.

It is said that our brain remembers visuals better than text. Take your text-heavy notes and use a highlighter to mark important facts, then ask AI to summarize them in a visual format, which will help you remember the topic.

If you are appearing for the 10th board exams this year, you can ask AI to create a practice question paper based on the types of questions asked in the board exams. Then, solve that practice paper to test your preparation. But remember to cross-check the answers with your own notes, not with AI.

What did the principals say?
Dr. Jyoti Arora, Principal of Mount Abu Public School in Delhi, says that AI can improve children's learning, but only if it is used as a tool to enhance understanding, not as a shortcut. We tell children where it is appropriate to use AI and where it is not. We also make parents aware of this. Shalini Nambiar, Principal of Jaipuria School in Ghaziabad, said that it has become essential to educate children about the right and wrong uses of AI. We explain in the assembly where using AI is acceptable and how it will affect their critical thinking.
