No decision yet on HOD rotation rule in medical colleges; NMC clarifies

Amidst ongoing discussions regarding the proposal to rotate Heads of Department (HODs) in the country’s medical colleges every three years, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has clarified the situation. The Commission stated that no final decision has been taken on this matter yet, and deliberations on the proposal are still underway.
Recently, reports emerged that a proposal was being drafted to limit the tenure of HODs in medical colleges to three years, followed by the appointment of a new HOD on a rotational basis. This news sparked various discussions within the medical education community, with many faculty members and experts expressing their views both in favor of and against the proposal.
Currently only under discussion
The NMC has now stated that the proposed amendment is currently only at the discussion stage. It noted that the Commission seeks opinions from relevant stakeholders across the country before implementing any major changes. As part of this process, the proposal was placed in the public domain to gather feedback from medical colleges, faculty members, experts, and other stakeholders.
Decision expected soon
According to reports, the study of the suggestions and objections received is ongoing. The Commission is reviewing all aspects, and no final decision has been made yet; the process of dialogue and consultation with stakeholders remains active.

PG Diploma courses to be discontinued
Additionally, the NMC has decided to discontinue all Post-Graduate (PG) diploma medical courses in the coming years. These will be replaced by degree programs such as Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Surgery (MS).
The NMC has issued a letter to medical colleges and institutions across the country regarding this matter. According to the Commission, the 2026-27 academic session will be the final year for admissions into PG diploma courses. Subsequently, no new students will be admitted to these courses starting from the 2027-28 academic year, and the courses will gradually be phased out completely.
