The Ministry of Education has extended the application deadline for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for the 2026-27 academic year to November 15. Students who were unable to submit their NMMSS forms within the original timeframe should now complete the application process by visiting the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) before the extended deadline.
Additionally, the Union Ministry of Education has released a revised schedule alongside the extension of the application deadline for the 2026-27 academic year. The revised dates can be viewed in the table below:
Event | Date
Last date for application submission | November 15, 2026
Verification by Institute Nodal Officer (L1) | November 30, 2026
Verification by District Nodal Officer (L2) | December 15, 2026
It should be noted that the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) has been open for student applications since June 1, 2026. Before applying for the scholarship, students are required to complete a One-Time Registration (OTR) on the portal. As of October 30, 2026, 90,483 fresh applications and 1,99,531 renewal applications had been received.
Students who have already submitted their applications should ensure that the verification process is completed by the respective Institute Nodal Officer (L1) by November 30, and by the District Nodal Officer (L2) by December 15, 2026.
Eligibility and Criteria
To apply for the NMMSS scholarship, students must have secured at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade) in Class 7. A 5% relaxation in marks is provided for students belonging to the SC/ST categories. The annual income of the student's parents must not exceed ₹3.50 lakh.
What is the scholarship scheme?
The primary objective of the NMMSS is to provide support to meritorious students from economically weaker sections, enabling them to continue their education from class 9 to class 12—following the completion of class 8—without any interruption.
The scheme offers 1 lakh new scholarships annually to eligible students in class 9 who qualify through an examination conducted by the respective state or union territory governments. Subject to meeting specified academic requirements, the scholarship can be renewed and continued from class 10 through class 12. Students who pass the examination are awarded a scholarship of ₹12,000 per year.
