PG Medical Admission 2025-26: Amidst the increasing competition for postgraduate (PG) medical seats in the country, there's some good news for medical students. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has taken a significant decision to provide more options to candidates aspiring for PG admissions this year. The commission has approved 171 additional PG seats in various medical colleges across the country and instructed the counseling authorities to include them immediately.

171 New PG Seats Approved
According to the NMC, these 171 additional seats have been added to several important medical specialties. These include subjects like General Medicine, General Surgery, Anesthesia, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Radiology, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry, Orthopedics, Respiratory Medicine, and Pathology. This will give students more opportunities to choose their preferred branch.

Colleges in Several States Benefit
These additional PG seats have been allocated to medical colleges in several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Odisha, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, and Haryana. These seats have been approved under the appeal process, where colleges challenged previous decisions.

No Need to Wait for LoP for Counseling
The NMC's Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), in a notice issued on December 31, 2025, clarified that the PG seats approved by the First Appeal Committee for the 2025-26 academic session will be fully valid for counseling. Counseling authorities will not have to wait for separate Letters of Permission (LoP) from the colleges for these seats.

Seats Granted After Appeal
Previously, some medical colleges had appealed against the MARB's earlier decisions under the NMC Act 2019. These appeals were considered in the meetings of the First Appeal Committee held on December 22 and 23, after which the additional seats were approved. The list uploaded on the website will be considered valid.
The commission has also clarified that only the list of seats uploaded on the NMC website will be considered a valid document for counseling. This will prevent any eligible PG seats from remaining vacant due to administrative delays. Formal Letters of Permission (LoPs) will be issued soon.

PG students to benefit directly.
According to NMC officials, this decision aims to ensure the maximum utilization of PG seats, while also maintaining regulatory oversight through the appeal process. State medical education departments and counseling bodies have been instructed to implement this decision immediately. In the context of intense competition for PG medical seats, this decision brings new opportunities for thousands of medical aspirants.
