There is welcome news for in-service teachers pursuing the NIOS bridge course. The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) has introduced the option of a supplementary examination alongside the main exam for this course. Consequently, if a teacher is unable to take the main exam or fails to pass it for any reason, they will have another opportunity to clear the examination. Additionally, 250 marks have been allocated for internal assessment within the course, with special emphasis placed on the teachers' practical experience in schools. This initiative will benefit thousands of in-service teachers across the country.

**Bridge Course Mandated Following Supreme Court Order**
The Supreme Court has made a six-month bridge course mandatory for assistant teachers appointed in primary schools based on B.Ed. qualifications between June 28, 2018, and August 11, 2023. NIOS launched this course in compliance with that directive. Its objective is to provide teachers with the necessary professional training for teaching at the primary level.

**Evaluation Based on 500 Marks**
The total evaluation for the bridge course is set at 500 marks. Of these, 250 marks are allocated for internal assessment, and 250 marks are assigned to the examination conducted upon course completion. The internal assessment incorporates the teachers' work and experience within the school environment.

**100 Marks for School Experience**
Out of the 250 marks for internal assessment, 100 marks are dedicated to school experience. Evaluation in this category will be based on lesson planning, teaching activities, portfolios, and various other engagements—tasks that in-service teachers are already performing. School experience accounts for four credits—or 20 percent—of the total 20 credits.

**Second Chance Upon Failure**
In addition to the main examination, a supplementary examination will also be conducted. This ensures that teachers who are unable to appear for the exam or fail to pass it get another opportunity to qualify. A minimum of 50 percent marks in the practical examination and 40 percent in the theory examination will be required. It is mandatory to secure an aggregate of at least 50 percent marks across all examinations.

Number of teachers registered
According to Dr. Alok Kumar Gupta, Deputy Director of the Capacity Building Cell at NIOS, this course has been designed to strengthen the professional capabilities of teachers. The course has already commenced with a formal orientation. A total of 67,530 teachers nationwide—including 34,044 from Uttar Pradesh—have registered for it.
