New Zealand Modifies Post-Study Work Visa Rules; Indian Students to Benefit

According to Immigration New Zealand, the new short-term graduate work visa will allow eligible graduates to work in New Zealand for up to six months. This visa grants open work rights.

Visa regulations for international students studying in New Zealand have been revised. Starting November 16, 2026, the country will introduce a new short-term graduate work visa for eligible foreign graduates. This initiative will allow certain students—who do not qualify for the existing post-study work visa—to stay and work in New Zealand after completing their studies. Additionally, eligibility criteria for the existing post-study work visa have been expanded, a move that could benefit Indian students.

New 6-Month Work Visa

Under the new short-term graduate work visa, eligible graduates will be permitted to work in New Zealand for a maximum of six months. This visa offers open work rights, meaning applicants do not need a job offer before applying and can work for any company, subject to the visa's conditions. It is designed for graduates who have completed an eligible NZQCF Level 5, 6, or 7 qualification in New Zealand but whose qualification does not make them eligible for the existing post-study work visa.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for the new visa, the relevant qualification must have been completed through at least 24 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand. English language and foundation courses do not count towards this requirement. Applicants must also have available funds of at least NZD 5,000 and meet health and character requirements. Graduates must apply within three months of their New Zealand student visa expiring. Please note that this visa is valid for six months and is issued only once.

Changes for Graduate Diploma Holders

New Zealand has also modified the rules for the existing post-study work visa. From November 16, students who complete an eligible Level 7 Graduate Diploma in New Zealand may become eligible for a post-study work visa, provided they also hold a bachelor's degree. Notably, this bachelor's degree can be from New Zealand or another country. Consequently, a student who has completed a bachelor's degree in India could qualify for a post-study work visa after completing an eligible Graduate Diploma in New Zealand, subject to meeting other requirements. However, the Graduate Diploma course itself must be completed on a full-time basis in New Zealand.

Duration of the Post-Study Work Visa

Students completing an eligible Graduate Diploma may receive a post-study work visa for a duration matching their study period, up to a maximum of one year. Meanwhile, a post-study work visa of one year will be available for students completing an eligible Level 8 Post-Graduate Diploma, and up to three years for those completing an eligible Master's degree; however, specific conditions will apply in these cases as well.
