New MBBS Rule: Studies Must Now Be Completed Within 10 Years; 4 Attempts Allowed for the First Year..
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has proposed extending the duration of the MBBS program to 10 years, whereas previously this period was 9 years. Under the ‘Graduate Medical Education Regulations (Amendment) 2023,’ this duration had been set at 9 years. However, before that, students were allowed a maximum of 10 years from the date of admission to complete their MBBS studies. The new 10-year rule, which is now set to be implemented, encompasses a 4.5-year academic course alongside a mandatory one-year ‘Rotatory Medical Internship.’
The Commission has clarified that there will be no changes to the regulations concerning the First Professional MBBS Examination. As per the existing rules, students will continue to be permitted a maximum of four attempts to pass the first-year MBBS examination.
**Suggestions Sought from Students and Medical Colleges**
In an official notification issued by the NMC, it is stated that this new rule has been approved by the competent authority. However, the Commission has invited suggestions from students, medical colleges, faculty members, and other stakeholders, noting that they may also register any objections they have regarding this new rule. A period of 30 days has been allotted for this purpose. Once this period concludes, the new rule will be reviewed based on the suggestions and objections received by the NMC. The Commission has further clarified that, during the review process, only feedback received via the designated email address will be taken into consideration.
**How Many Years Does It Take to Become a Doctor?**
Admission to the MBBS program begins with the NEET UG examination; students who qualify in this exam gain the opportunity to pursue their MBBS degree at medical colleges across the country. While the standard duration of the MBBS course is 5.5 years, the actual academic study spans only 4.5 years, with the remaining year dedicated to a mandatory internship. However, there are many students who are unable to complete their MBBS within this 5.5-year timeframe, and it takes them several years to successfully pass the course. If, for any reason, a student is unable to complete a semester, they are allowed to retake the examination. However, students are granted only four attempts to pass the first year, within which they must successfully clear the exams.
