Delhi University (DU) has decided to expand residential facilities for students. As part of this initiative, DU will construct new hostels at a cost of ₹5,889 crore. The construction of these new hostels will provide accommodation for 21,895 students. A proposal to this effect was approved during the 284th meeting of the Executive Council (EC) held on Tuesday, presided over by DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh. While chairing the meeting, Prof. Singh stated that the designs for these buildings would be prepared keeping the requirements of the 21st century in mind.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that the circumstances prevailing when the university's earlier hostels were built were different from those expected in the future; therefore, the work is being planned with the next 100 years in view.

**Reconstruction of two old hostels alongside new ones**

According to the proposal passed by the DU Executive Council, new hostels will be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹4,027 crore, providing additional accommodation for 15,758 students. Additionally, a proposal to reconstruct two old hostels—at a cost of approximately ₹1,862 crore—was also approved; once completed, these will provide accommodation for 6,137 students.

**Locations for new hostels; names of old ones to remain unchanged**

Responding to a query, DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh stated that the names of existing hostels would not be changed upon their reconstruction. He further mentioned that the decision has been made to construct additional multi-story hostel buildings at Delhi University's Dhaka Complex, Surajmal Vihar Campus, and Najafgarh Campus. In addition to the construction of new hostels, approval has been granted for the reconstruction of Jubilee Hall and the PG Men's Hostel. Noting the scarcity of vacant land for building construction within the university, it was decided that each hostel block would be designed to fully utilize the maximum permissible Floor Area Ratio (FAR) for that specific campus.

Furthermore, these blocks will feature amenities such as dining halls, shops, common rooms, reading rooms, and warden residences. Hostel complexes across the three campuses have been planned with these requirements in mind.

**Hostels for Boys and Girls**
As per the proposal passed by the Executive Council (EC), in addition to the construction at the Dhaka Complex, hostels for both boys and girls are to be built at the Veer Savarkar College in Roshanpura (Najafgarh). Additionally, hostels for boys and girls will be constructed at the university's West Campus in Dwarka (Najafgarh) and at the East Campus in Surajmal Vihar, Karkardooma. The EC also urged all colleges to prepare proposals for constructing new hostels on their own premises and to submit them to the funding agency.
