Neither Prelims nor Mains: UPSC Offers These Government Jobs Directly Through an Interview..

For most people, the mere mention of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) immediately brings to mind the lengthy process of the Civil Services Examination—specifically, the sequence of Prelims, Mains, and finally, the Interview. However, few are aware that the UPSC conducts examinations for more than just services like the IAS or IPS; the Commission also undertakes direct recruitment for various government positions, wherein candidates are selected solely based on an interview.

How UPSC Conducts Direct Recruitment

According to the Recruitment Branch of the Union Public Service Commission, the Commission selects candidates for various ministries and government departments through a process of direct recruitment. Applications for these recruitment drives are accepted via the UPSC's Online Recruitment Application (ORA) portal. Candidates submit their applications, following which a shortlisting process is conducted based on their qualifications and experience. The shortlisted candidates are then called in for an interview, and the final selection is made based on their performance in that interview.

Positions Covered Under Such Recruitment

From time to time, the UPSC issues recruitment notifications for various expert and technical positions. Examples of such positions include:

- Assistant Professor
- Specialist Doctor
- Scientific Officer
- Research Officer
- Legal Officer
- Engineering or Technical Expert positions

These recruitment drives are conducted on behalf of various ministries, government departments, and research institutions.

When Selection is Based Solely on Interviews

According to UPSC regulations, if the number of applicants for a specific position is low or if the position is highly technical in nature, the Commission may opt to make the selection directly based on an interview. However, if the number of applicants is significantly high, a Recruitment Test (RT) is conducted initially, followed by the final selection through an interview. Candidates interested in applying for such jobs should keep a close watch on the 'Recruitment' section of the official UPSC website or the ORA portal, where vacancies across various departments are published periodically. The Process Differs from the Civil Services Examination

It is important to note that for services such as the IAS, IPS, or IRS, one must take the UPSC's Civil Services Examination, which comprises three distinct stages: Prelims, Mains, and the Interview. However, for certain specialized and technical recruitment drives conducted by the Commission, this lengthy examination process does not apply. In such instances, candidates may secure a government job based solely on an interview.
