NEET UG 2026: MBBS seats in Bihar's medical colleges may increase; the department has started preparations..
A major initiative is underway to increase MBBS seats in Bihar's government medical colleges. MBBS seats may be increased in all medical colleges in the state, including Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur. The application portal for seat increase is currently open on the National Medical Commission (NMC) website. In light of this, the state health department has instructed all medical colleges to prepare proposals.
Bihar's Health Department Secretary, Lokesh Kumar Singh, has asked the principals of the medical colleges to begin the process of increasing seats. He has given clear instructions that each medical college should submit a proposal for 30 additional MBBS seats. The department believes that this will increase the number of doctors in the state and strengthen healthcare services. The principal of SKMCH has also stated that preparations for increasing seats have begun at the college level.
Many Medical Colleges to Have 150 MBBS Seats
If the proposals are approved, the number of MBBS seats in several medical colleges in Bihar will reach 150. These include SKMCH Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga Medical College, Gaya Medical College, Bettiah Medical College, Anugrah Narayan Medical College, Gaya, Bhagwan Mahavir Medical College, Pawapuri, and Bhagalpur Medical College. Meanwhile, the number of seats at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) could increase to 230. Patna AIIMS is likely to have 145 seats, Purnea Medical College 130, and IGIMS Patna 180 MBBS seats.
More Faculty Members
Recently, the Health Department held a meeting with the principals of the medical colleges via video conferencing. During the meeting, the secretary said that any shortcomings identified in the process of increasing seats would be addressed jointly by the government and the department. He also assured that assistant professors, associate professors, and professors would be appointed in the medical colleges. The shortage of technical staff will also be addressed.
PG Seats Increased in Medical Colleges
It is noteworthy that in recent times, the number of postgraduate (PG) seats in Bihar's medical colleges has also been increased. A total of 11 postgraduate seats were added in the Surgery, Gynecology, and Pediatrics departments at SKMCH. The Pediatrics department also started offering MD courses for the first time. Postgraduate seats have also been increased in other medical colleges.
