Here is an important update for NEET PG 2026 aspirants. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the new seat matrix for postgraduate medical seats for the 2026-27 academic year. According to this, a total of 63,177 PG seats are available across medical colleges and institutions nationwide. This figure encompasses seats in government, private, and deemed medical institutions: 33,088 seats in government institutions, 21,892 in private institutions, and 8,197 in deemed institutions. The NMC has clarified that this matrix is based on currently approved seats; any additional seats approved later will be included in an updated matrix.
**Over 33,000 seats in government institutions**
The NMC's new seat matrix details a total of 63,177 PG seats. These include 33,088 seats in government medical colleges, 21,892 in private institutions, and 8,197 in deemed university institutions. The Commission stated that applications for new PG courses or for increasing seats in existing courses—which are currently pending approval—have not been included in this matrix. Once approved, they will be added to a revised seat matrix.
**Karnataka has the highest number of PG seats**
Karnataka leads the list in terms of state-wise figures, with a total of 8,323 PG seats. It is followed by Maharashtra (6,992 seats), Tamil Nadu (6,306 seats), and Uttar Pradesh (6,082 seats). Other states include Andhra Pradesh (4,142 seats), Telangana (3,998 seats), Gujarat (3,862 seats), Rajasthan (3,857 seats), and Madhya Pradesh (3,052 seats). West Bengal has 2,384 PG seats, and Kerala has 2,145. There are 1,660 seats recorded in Delhi, 1,470 in Bihar, 1,419 in Odisha, 1,129 in Haryana, and 982 in Punjab.
**Highest number of seats in MD General Medicine**
In terms of specializations, MD General Medicine has the highest number of seats at 6,143. This is followed by MD Anaesthesiology with 5,672 seats and MS General Surgery with 5,591 seats. Other notable figures include 4,690 seats for MS Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 4,203 for MD Paediatrics, 3,656 for MS Orthopaedics, and 3,343 for MD Pathology. There are 3,224 seats in MD Radiodiagnosis/Radiology and 2,479 in MS Ophthalmology. Additionally, there are 1,596 seats for MD Psychiatry, 1,832 for MD Microbiology, and 1,880 for MD Dermatology.
**Super-speciality seats**
The seat matrix also lists seats for super-speciality courses. There are 592 seats in DM Cardiology, 440 in MCh Urology, 426 in MCh Neurosurgery, and 377 in DM Neurology. Furthermore, there are 338 seats for MCh Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 288 for DM Nephrology, and 257 for DM Medical Gastroenterology.
**Admissions based on approved seats only**
The NMC has instructed medical colleges to grant PG admissions only based on the seats listed in the updated seat matrix approved by the MARB. Institutions have been directed not to admit students beyond the sanctioned capacity. The Commission has also asked the counseling committees and other concerned parties to examine the matrix. Instructions have been issued to report any errors, deficiencies, or discrepancies to the MARB. According to the NMC, the seat matrix may be revised if necessary.
