NEET PG 2026: Just ahead of the exam, the Union Health Ministry has implemented new rules aimed at making the examination process more secure, transparent, and convenient for candidates.
NEET PG 2026: Several major changes have been introduced for the lakhs of medical aspirants preparing for NEET-PG 2026. The Union Health Ministry has implemented new rules designed to make the exam process more secure, transparent, and candidate-friendly. Students will no longer need to travel to distant cities for the exam center; they will receive information about the exam city in advance and will have more time to solve each question compared to before. Additionally, security measures have been significantly strengthened. Let us take a look at the changes introduced for NEET-PG 2026.
Major changes introduced by the government before the exam
The Union Health Ministry has decided to implement a new system ahead of the NEET-PG exam scheduled for August 30, 2026. The objective of these changes is to make the exam fair, secure, and technology-driven. While reviewing preparations for NEET-PG 2026, Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda instructed officials to conduct the exam with complete transparency. He also reviewed the preparations with the NBEMS, the technical team, and other agencies. A total of 2,73,183 candidates have registered for NEET-PG 2026 this year, marking an increase of over 12.5 percent compared to the previous year.
Exam centers now available closer to home
The most significant change this time has been made to the exam center allocation process. Previously, exam centers were allotted on a “first-come, first-served” basis. This often forced candidates who applied later to travel to other states to take the exam. Under the new system, candidates will be able to select three preferred states for their exam center. It will be mandatory to list their own state as the first preference. The Ministry states that this will increase the likelihood of candidates being allotted exam centers closer to their homes and spare them from unnecessary travel.
Advance information on exam city
Another major change concerns information regarding the exam city. Candidates will now be informed of their designated exam city approximately three weeks prior to the examination. Previously, this information was provided only a few days in advance, causing difficulties in arranging travel and accommodation. The new system will allow candidates to plan effectively well in advance.
Revised exam pattern
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has also modified the exam pattern. The examination will now consist of 180 multiple-choice questions, with a duration of 210 minutes for completion. Previously, the exam comprised 200 questions with a total of 800 marks. While the total duration of the exam remains unchanged, the reduction in the number of questions means candidates will have more time to solve each question than before.
Exam to be held in a single shift this time
In recent years, the NEET-PG exam was conducted in two shifts due to various circumstances; however, this time, it will be held in a single shift. According to the Ministry of Health, conducting the exam in a single shift ensures that all candidates receive a question paper of the same difficulty level.
Enhanced security measures
The government has further strengthened security arrangements for the exam this time. Aadhaar-based verification will be conducted at every stage, from the application process to the day of the exam. If a candidate’s identity cannot be verified via fingerprints, an iris biometric system will be used for identification.
To ensure the security of question papers, measures such as multi-level encryption technology, secure offline preparation, and controlled digital decryption immediately before the exam starts have been implemented. The Ministry has clarified that any claims regarding a prior leak of the question paper are completely false and misleading.
Strict Vigilance Against Cheating and Fraud
The NBEMS has launched a dedicated email facility for reporting complaints regarding cheating, impersonation, or any other form of irregular activity. Additionally, advisories are being issued to keep candidates consistently informed. The NEET-PG 2026 examination will be conducted at over 1,300 centers across approximately 340 cities nationwide. More than 60,000 personnel will be deployed to manage the conduct of the exam. Measures such as CCTV surveillance, biometric verification, candidate screening, signal jammers, secure computer allocation, and live monitoring will be implemented at the examination centers.
