NCERT to launch diploma course in guidance and counselling for teachers; here’s the plan..
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is set to launch a diploma course in Guidance and Counselling. NCERT has announced the introduction of a 'Diploma Course in Guidance and Counselling' (DCGC) specifically for school teachers and counselling professionals, scheduled to commence in January 2027. The objective of this course is to train teachers and other professionals in the education sector to understand and address the academic, socio-emotional, and ethical challenges faced by students.
Let us explore the purpose behind the launch of the Diploma Course in Guidance and Counselling (DCGC), its core focus, and how it will be conducted.
Developing Skills to Understand Students' Emotions
The primary goal of the NCERT's diploma course is to take steps toward alleviating the academic and social stress experienced by students. In the current environment, students face various pressures—ranging from career-related challenges and comparisons with peers regarding academics or social standing, to the stress of examinations.
It is believed that if these issues are listened to attentively and students are provided with effective guidance, many of their problems can be resolved. This diploma course is being introduced to equip teachers with the necessary skills to address these concerns.
Regarding the curriculum, the course will train teachers to handle challenges related to students' academic, social, and emotional issues. It aims to develop skills in teachers that will enable them to assist students in making sound decisions, understanding their responsibilities, and fostering positive behavior.
A One-Year Diploma Course in Hybrid Mode, Including an Internship
The Diploma Course in Guidance and Counselling offered by NCERT is a one-year program, structured into three parts. It will be conducted in a hybrid mode and includes an internship component. The first six months of study will be conducted in distance mode. This will be followed by three months of face-to-face instruction and a subsequent three-month internship period. Teachers may choose to complete their internship in their home district.
Diploma Course to be Launched at 6 Centers
NCERT is set to launch a diploma course in Guidance and Counseling across six of its centers—located in Delhi, Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Mysuru, and Shillong. Each center has an intake capacity of 50 seats for this diploma program. Notably, once NCERT transitions into a university, these centers will function as colleges, which will also lead to an increase in the number of available seats.
