NCERT to function as a university from 2027; find out which courses are being planned..

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will no longer be limited to merely developing school curricula and textbooks. It is preparing to venture into the higher education sector starting from the 2027-28 academic year. Under this initiative, courses at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD levels will be introduced. Initially, the offerings will include courses such as BA-BEd, BSc-BEd, and BCom-BEd. These programs will emphasize school education, modern teaching techniques, the use of AI, and child-friendly pedagogical methods. To facilitate this, NCERT will upgrade its regional centers into colleges.

**New courses to launch in 2027-28**
NCERT has been granted the status of a 'Deemed-to-be University.' Based on this, the institute is preparing to launch the first batch of its UG, PG, and PhD programs in the 2027-28 academic session. The initial plan involves introducing integrated degree programs like BA-BEd, BSc-BEd, and BCom-BEd.

**Focus on teacher training**
The syllabi for these courses will be designed with the specific needs of school education in mind. Key areas of focus will include effective teaching methods, play-based learning, the use of technology, and AI-based teaching. NCERT will also collaborate with the NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education) to review the curriculum.

**Student assessments reveal shortcomings**
NCERT conducted assessments to evaluate the proficiency of students in classes 3, 6, and 9 across subjects such as language, mathematics, science, and social science. The report highlighted several deficiencies regarding basic mathematical skills. For instance, 45 percent of Class 3 students were unable to correctly write numbers up to 99, while 47 percent of Class 6 students could not recite the multiplication table of 10.

**Six regional centers to become colleges**
Six of NCERT's regional centers will be developed into colleges. These include the centers located in Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Mysore, and Shillong, as well as the Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education. Currently, these centers offer degrees and PhD programs from local universities. Preparations are underway to launch NCERT's own degree programs here starting in 2027. Students already registered will continue to receive their degrees from the respective universities.
