NCERT to Develop AI Textbooks for Classes 11 and 12, Forms a Team

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will develop AI textbooks for classes 11 and 12.  According to the Ministry of Education, NCERT has also included a project using AI tools on animations and games in the Grade 6 vocational education textbook.

Now, students in schools will also learn about artificial intelligence in detail. The Ministry of Education stated that the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has formed a textbook development team to prepare the syllabus and textbooks for Artificial Intelligence for classes 11 and 12. According to sources, in a recent response to a question in the Lok Sabha, the Ministry of Education also stated that NCERT has included a project using AI tools on animations and games in the Grade 6 vocational education textbook.

The Ministry of Education said in its response, "As a follow-up to NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has constituted a textbook development team to develop the syllabus and textbooks for Artificial Intelligence for Grades 11 and 12. NCERT has also included a project on animations and games in the Grade 6 vocational education textbook. This project involves the use of AI tools."

When will it start?

The government has stated that the AI ​​curriculum will be introduced in all schools from Class 3 onwards from the academic session 2026-27, in line with NEP 2020 and NCF SE 2023. According to official sources, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has prepared a syllabus for AI and computational thinking for students from classes 3 to 12, aiming to introduce basic concepts of AI in lower classes and make advanced computational thinking and AI a compulsory subject for classes 9 and 10. What is the objective of SOAR?

The Government of India has launched a national initiative called SOAR (Skilling for AI Readiness), aligning with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the National Programme on AI (NPAI) Skilling Framework, and the Developed India 2047 vision for digital empowerment and inclusive growth.

The objective of SOAR is to enhance AI awareness and basic competencies among school students (Grades 6-12) and to develop AI literacy among educators. The Ministry stated that this program aims to bridge the digital divide by ensuring equitable access to AI education across all regions, thereby supporting the national agenda of inclusive, future-ready skilling.

The SOAR Curriculum comprises four progressive NSQF-aligned modules

The SOAR curriculum comprises four progressive National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF)-aligned modules. For students in Grades 6 to 12, three distinct micro-credentials are offered: (i) AI to be Aware, (ii) AI to Acquire, and (iii) AI to Aspire, each of 15 hours duration, totaling 45 hours.
