Ayurveda in NCERT Books: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has included Ayurveda in the science curriculum following government directives. New chapters on Ayurveda have been added to science textbooks for grades 6 to 8, aiming to introduce students to India's ancient scientific traditions.
The Concept of Ayurveda in the Class 8 Book "Curiosity"
NCERT Director Dinesh Prasad Saklani explained that the inclusion of Ayurvedic principles is aimed at promoting holistic education. Chapter 3 of the Class 8 science textbook "Curiosity" explains that Ayurveda emphasizes balance between body, mind, and environment. It also emphasizes lifestyle practices such as Dinacharya and Ritucharya, encouraging students to adopt practices such as nutritious food, regular exercise, and mental awareness.
Ancient principles are also mentioned in the Class 6 textbook
The Class 6 Curiosity Science textbook depicts the classification of substances according to Ayurveda, based on the theory of twenty opposing qualities (guna) described in texts such as the "Ashtanga Hridaya Sutra Sthana." It aims to develop a holistic approach to health, nutrition, and nature.
Plans to Expand to Higher Education
According to a report in the Education Times, NCERT will now revise the science syllabus for higher classes as well. The University Grants Commission (UGC) will develop a separate Ayurveda-focused curriculum for higher education.
Joint NCERT and UGC Effort
Union AYUSH Minister Prataprao Jadhav stated that NCERT and UGC will jointly develop course modules for schools and higher education to help young students understand the principles of holistic health. Indian knowledge systems have already been integrated into education in states such as Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh.
The minister added that Ayurveda-related subjects are now also included in teacher training programs. For their effective implementation, orientation sessions, workshops, and handbooks are being prepared for teachers.
