NCERT: A major step has been taken towards making school education in the country future-ready. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has constituted a special Textbook Development Team to prepare an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based curriculum and textbooks for classes 11 and 12.
This information was provided by the Ministry of Education in Parliament. The Ministry stated that this initiative is part of a broader plan to incorporate AI into school education under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
AI Curriculum to be Developed in Line with NCF-SE 2023
In response to a question in the Lok Sabha, the Ministry of Education clarified that this AI-related curriculum and textbooks for classes 11 and 12 are being developed in accordance with the National Curriculum Framework - School Education (NCF-SE) 2023. The objective is to prepare students for new technologies and make them eligible for future jobs.
AI Project Also Included in Class 6 Textbook
The government also stated that another important step has been taken in this direction. NCERT has included a project based on animation and games in the Class 6 Vocational Education textbook, which incorporates the use of AI tools. This will help students develop technology-based thinking at an early stage.
AI Education to Begin from Class 3 from 2026-27
The central government has reiterated that AI and computational thinking are key pillars of future education. According to the government, AI education will be implemented in all schools from Class 3 onwards from the 2026-27 academic session. This decision is entirely in line with the reforms of NEP 2020.
CBSE Had Already Prepared a Draft AI Curriculum
Earlier, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had prepared a draft curriculum based on AI and computational thinking for students from classes 3 to 12. According to official sources:
A basic understanding of AI will be provided in the initial classes. AI and Computational Thinking will be taught as compulsory subjects in Classes 9 and 10.
SOAR Program to provide AI skilling
To take AI education to the grassroots level, the government has also launched a national program called SOAR (Skilling for AI Readiness). This initiative is aligned with the NEP 2020, the National AI Skilling Framework, and the vision of Developed India 2047. The objectives of SOAR are:
To increase awareness of AI among students from Classes 6 to 12.
To strengthen the AI literacy of teachers.
To bridge the digital divide and provide equal opportunities across all regions.
Students to receive Micro-credentials
Under the SOAR program, students will receive training in four stages linked to the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF). This will include three micro-credentials for students in Classes 6 to 12:
AI to be Aware
AI to Acquire
AI to Aspire
Each module will be 15 hours long, and students will receive a total of 45 hours of AI learning. The government believes that these initiatives will make school education more inclusive, technology-enabled, and future-ready.
