NCERT Book: The NCERT has now revised the Class 7 Social Science textbook. The changes include references to Pakistani-backed terrorist attacks on India, which hinder the normalization of relations between the two countries, increased tensions with China, and cultural ties with neighboring countries.
A new chapter on neighboring countries has been added to the book. It states that Pakistan Army-backed terrorist attacks have affected normal relations between India and Pakistan. This 31-page chapter, titled "India and its Neighbors," extends India's neighborhood beyond land borders to include maritime partners. The book establishes India's central and strategic role in Asia.
Relations with China
The book mentions the long civilizational ties and recent tensions with China. It states that both India and China are the largest and most influential Asian countries, with Buddhism being a significant link between them. The book notes that in recent years, tensions have arisen primarily due to border disputes, but efforts are being made to resolve these disputes through trade, dialogue, and border resolution mechanisms. A "Don't Miss Out" section mentions temples built by Hindu merchants in the Chinese port city of Quanzhou, where the pillars of the Kaiyuan Temple are inscribed with depictions of Vishnu, Shiva, and stories from the Ramayana and Puranas.
What about Bangladesh and Nepal?
The book states that relations between India and Bangladesh are deep and based on historical, cultural, and natural factors such as rivers. Relations with Nepal are described as characterized by an open border and deep cultural ties, where citizens can cross the border without passports or visas.
