NBEMS New Course: Now, doctors and faculty members will also be able to use AI. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has launched a program focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in medical education. This medical AI course is completely free. The course is for postgraduate doctors and faculty members. NBEMS has confirmed in its notification that no fees will be charged for the course. Interested candidates can apply on the official website natboard.edu.in/Sangam/index.php. Let's find out what benefits this will bring to medical education and the medical sector.

The program will be 6 months long, comprising 20 interactive modules delivered through live online sessions, emphasizing clinical utility, ethics, patient safety, and accountability. Importantly, no prior technical or programming background is required. To understand the curriculum design, doctors can read the notification and learn about the course structure and the details of each module. The aim is to equip doctors with the necessary AI skills for better diagnostics and personalized treatment.

Professors from these universities will provide AI training
The sessions will be conducted by faculty from institutions worldwide, including faculty from Mayo Clinic, Harvard University, Oxford University, IISc Bangalore, IIM Lucknow, and other universities.

Who can apply?
This course is for current NBEMS trainees, alumni who qualified after the 2020 session, faculty of NBEMS-accredited departments, and other professionals. Participants must attend at least 75 percent of the live sessions, with attendance tracked at the beginning and end of each class. Additionally, upon completion of the online assessment modules, they will be eligible to receive a digital course completion certificate.

How attendance will be taken
The class schedule will be released on the official NBEMS website natboard.edu.in, and participants can access each session by clicking on the "Join the Class" link displayed with the respective module. This link will redirect attendees to the online platform and automatically record their attendance when the session begins. This link will become active 30 minutes before the scheduled time and will only be accessible for 30 minutes after the start time.

What will be taught in the course?
According to the notification, by the end of the program on Artificial Intelligence in Medical Education, participants will have a foundational understanding of healthcare-related AI concepts, requiring no prior technical or programming expertise. They will gain the ability to critically evaluate AI tools, models, and scientific literature for their clinical validity, utility, bias, and impact on patient safety.

Benefits for doctors
This course emphasizes sound clinical decision-making. It will help doctors understand when AI is appropriate and when it is not, and will also address ethical, legal, privacy, and cybersecurity considerations relevant to the Indian healthcare context.

Participants will learn to incorporate AI outputs into clinical decision-making through patient-centered thinking, contribute effectively as domain experts in multidisciplinary AI teams, and maintain professionalism, accountability, and transparency in the use of AI-assisted tools in patient care, education, and research.

Applicable to MBBS as well
According to media reports, NBEMS President and Chairperson Abhijat Sheth said that the goal is to help doctors understand, evaluate, and safely use AI without turning them into programmers or altering their clinical thinking. He said that the initiative to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) education into medical training is being undertaken with a clear, phased vision, starting with postgraduate faculty and students, then expanding to undergraduate (MBBS) education, and finally culminating in a sustainable, secure local AI infrastructure for healthcare.
