Natural Farming Course: Natural farming will now become a part of higher education. Efforts have begun to introduce undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), and PhD (research) courses in natural farming across the country. In this regard, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has written to all educational institutions and universities in the country. The ICAR Director General has written a letter advocating for the introduction of UG, PG, and research courses in natural farming at educational institutions and universities. Currently, several universities in the country offer elective courses in natural farming.

Let's find out what the ICAR Director General said about the introduction of regular UG, PG, and PhD courses in natural farming. And since when have these natural farming courses been offered?

Natural Farming: A Subject of National Importance
In his letter to educational institutions and universities, ICAR Director General Dr. ML Jat stated that natural farming has emerged as a subject of national importance. He said in the letter that natural farming is linked to India's strategic priorities for sustainable agriculture, environmental management, and farmer welfare.

BSc Honors Agriculture Natural Farming Program to be Launched
ICAR Director General Dr. ML Jat stated in his letter that the BSc Honors Agriculture Natural Farming program has been approved. This program has been developed according to the guidelines of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and approved after the recommendations of the Sixth Dean Committee. He said in the letter that this program has been sent to all agricultural universities for implementation. Dr. Jat said that some universities had started this program from the 2023-24 academic year. He expressed hope that the remaining universities will start this program from the next session.

Why MSc and PhD are Necessary
ICAR Director General Dr. ML Jat said that there is a need to strengthen postgraduate and advanced research in natural farming. He wrote in the letter that, given the growing national demand for chemical-free food systems, robust agro-ecosystems, improved soil health, and low-emission farming, all agricultural universities should start postgraduate and PhD programs in natural farming and related fields.

ICAR will provide assistance
ICAR Director General Dr. ML Jat said that ICAR will provide all possible assistance in improving the postgraduate and PhD curriculum for natural farming, including guidelines and resource materials. This assistance will include academic and technical support from ICAR.
