Career in Merchant Navy: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget 2026 in Parliament on Sunday, proposing the development of 20 new national waterways in the country. This will boost import-export facilities and create new career opportunities. Transporting goods via waterways is much easier and comparatively more economical, which is why the government has taken this decision, and the waterways will be constructed over the next five years.

Waterways are transportation routes that facilitate the movement of goods and passengers through rivers, canals, and sea routes. Compared to roads and railways, waterways are considered cheaper, more fuel-efficient, and environmentally friendly. Despite India's long coastline and extensive network of rivers, waterways have been underutilized so far. This budget proposal is considered a significant step towards expanding its use.

Waterways are crucial for trade because they allow for the transportation of heavy and bulk goods such as coal, iron ore, grains, cement, and petroleum products over long distances at a lower cost. This is where the role of the Merchant Navy in the country's import-export trade begins. Merchant Navy ships transport goods between the country and the rest of the world, thus accelerating international trade. Approximately 90% of India's foreign trade is conducted through sea routes, clearly demonstrating that waterways and the Merchant Navy are strong pillars of the country's economy.

Increased Opportunities in the Merchant Navy
With the expansion of waterways, career opportunities in the Merchant Navy are also increasing. The Merchant Navy is a commercial shipping service that includes cargo ships, tankers, and container ships. It offers positions such as Deck Officer, Marine Engineer, Navigation Officer, and Electro-Technical Officer. This career attracts young people who have technical knowledge and a desire to work at sea and gain international experience.

Medical Fitness is also Essential.
To pursue a career in the Merchant Navy, a background in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) in 12th grade is usually required. For the deck side, one needs to pursue navigation-related courses, and for the engineering side, marine engineering studies are required. These courses are offered by institutions recognized by the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping). Medical fitness is also mandatory.

Initially, as a cadet or trainee, the salary can be around ₹25,000 to ₹40,000 per month, which increases significantly with experience and rank, reaching several lakhs of rupees per month. With the budget's focus on waterways, the merchant navy is emerging as a strong and stable career option for young people in the coming years.
