MBBS Stipend 2026: ₹25,000 in UP, ₹27,000 in Bihar—find out how much medical interns are paid in different states.
MBBS Internship Stipend 2026: There is good news for medical students undergoing their internship after completing their MBBS studies. The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has increased the monthly stipend for MBBS and BDS interns to ₹25,000. Previously, these interns received ₹12,300 per month; this decision marks an increase of ₹12,700 in their monthly stipend. Notably, this benefit will also extend to Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs). Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced this decision following protests by medical interns. It is worth mentioning that, beyond Jammu and Kashmir, several other states—including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Punjab—have also increased the stipends for medical interns over the past two years. This raises the question: how much are MBBS interns receiving in various states across the country, and where has the most significant increase taken place?
Increase in Stipend for MBBS and BDS Interns in Jammu and Kashmir
Following a prolonged protest by medical interns in Jammu and Kashmir, the government has decided to increase their monthly stipend. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah shared this update on the social media platform X on Wednesday. He stated that the monthly stipend for MBBS and BDS interns in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has been raised from ₹12,300 to ₹25,000. This decision also covers Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs). The new rates will come into effect from October 1, 2026. This means that for all eligible interns covered by this order, the stipend will be calculated based on the revised, higher rate starting from October.
An Increase of Rs 12,700 Per Month
This decision by the Jammu and Kashmir government has resulted in an increase of Rs 12,700 in the monthly stipend for medical interns. Previously, they received Rs 12,300 per month, whereas now they will receive Rs 25,000. In percentage terms, this represents an increase of approximately 103.3 percent—meaning the stipend has more than doubled. If an eligible intern receives the stipend at the new rate for the full 12 months, they will earn a total of Rs 3 lakh over the year. Under the old rate, this amount would have been Rs 1,47,600. Thus, the difference over a 12-month period amounts to Rs 1,52,400; however, the actual amount an individual intern receives will depend on their eligibility and the duration of their internship.
Why Were Medical Interns on Strike?
MBBS and BDS interns in Jammu and Kashmir had long been demanding an increase in their stipends. They initiated a strike in September 2026 to press for this demand, arguing that their monthly stipend needed to be raised. Amidst the agitation, the government appealed to the interns on September 8 to call off the strike. At that time, the government requested one month to consider their demands and find a resolution; however, as no decision regarding a stipend increase followed, the interns remained dissatisfied. Strike Resumed, Decision Announced
Medical interns in Jammu and Kashmir resumed their strike on Tuesday, alleging that the government had failed to honor its commitment to increase their stipends. The very next day, Wednesday, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced an increase in the stipends. The government extended this hike to include not only MBBS and BDS interns but also foreign medical graduates. Following this decision, the new stipend rates will be effective from October 1, 2026.
Stipend Raised to ₹25,000 in Uttar Pradesh as Well
Prior to Jammu and Kashmir, the Uttar Pradesh government had also decided to increase the stipends for medical interns.
On August 25, 2026, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approved an increase in the monthly stipends for MBBS and BDS interns. Under this decision, the stipend for eligible students undergoing internships at government medical colleges, medical institutions, and medical universities was raised from ₹12,000 to ₹25,000—an increase of ₹13,000 per month. In percentage terms, this represents an increase of approximately 108.3%. It was estimated that this government decision would benefit around 3,928 medical and dental interns. Thus, a monthly stipend of ₹25,000 was approved for eligible MBBS and BDS interns in Uttar Pradesh as well.
