These countries offer quality medical education and programs in English. However, it is not easy to become a doctor in India after getting an MBBS degree from abroad.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has made strict rules for this. This ensures that even after getting a degree from abroad, only qualified and competent doctors can practice in India. The MBBS degree should be from an institute recognized by the NMC and the duration of the course should be at least 54 months. The process of becoming a doctor in India after doing an MBBS from abroad involves several steps. The National Medical Commission has laid down rules and guidelines for this. Know the step-by-step process:

1. Recognition of MBBS degree

Recognition by NMC: MBBS degree obtained from abroad must be recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). NMC releases the list of countries and institutions whose degrees are acceptable in India.

Duration of course: The degree program should be at least 54 months (4.5 years) and the medium of study must be English.

Submit documents: Submit your MBBS degree, transcript, and other required documents (passport, visa, etc.) for verification.

2. Pass the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE)

What is FMGE?: If you want to practice in India after doing MBBS from abroad, then you have to pass the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). NMC conducts this screening test.

FMGE Exam Pattern
300 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) in two parts.

Minimum 50% marks (150/300) are required to pass.

Held twice a year (June and December).

Eligibility: Only students with a primary medical degree from a foreign institution and internship in that country can take the FMGE.

Note: In the future, the FMGE may be replaced by the National Exit Test (NEXT), which will be a common licensing exam for MBBS students from India and abroad. Do check the latest update of NMC.

3. Complete the internship

Duration: After passing the FMGE, you will have to complete a 12-month compulsory internship (Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship – CRMI) in India.

Location: The internship will have to be done in a hospital or medical college recognized by the NMC.

Prerequisite: The internship can also be completed in the country from where the degree has been obtained, provided it follows the NMC guidelines (54 months of study + 12 months of internship). However, additional internships may be required to practice in India.
Certificate: Get a certificate on completion of the internship, which is required for registration.

4. Registration with State Medical Council
Apply for a license: After passing the FMGE and completing the internship, apply for registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or the respective State Medical Council (SMC).
Documents:
MBBS degree (from a foreign institute)
FMGE pass certificate
Internship completion certificate
Identity card (Aadhaar, passport, etc.)
Other required documents (check NMC/SMC website)
License: After registration, you will get a permanent license to practice medicine in India.

5. Optional: Specialization (PG course)
Postgraduation: If you want to become a specialist, then you have to pass the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-PG) for courses like MD (Doctor of Medicine) or MS (Master of Surgery).
Institute: Take admission to AIIMS, JIPMER, or other recognized institutes.
