Major Decision by UP Board: These Students to Receive Bonus Marks in Class 10 and 12 Exams..
The Uttar Pradesh Board of Secondary Education has taken a significant step toward encouraging sporting talent. The Board has drafted a proposal to award extra marks to students who excel in sports alongside their Class 10 and 12 examinations. Under this scheme, students who participate in—or win medals at—recognized competitions at the state, national, or international levels could receive bonus marks ranging from 5 to 20. This proposal has been forwarded to the state government for approval. Once the new system is implemented, students who demonstrate excellence in both sports and academics will reap direct benefits.
**Benefits Ranging from State to International Levels**
According to the proposed policy, students securing the first, second, or third position in state-level competitions will be awarded 5 extra marks. Meanwhile, the plan entails awarding 7 marks to students participating at the national level, and 10 marks to those securing a top-three finish. Participation in international competitions could fetch up to 15 marks, while winning a medal could earn a student up to 20 marks.
**Valid Certificate Mandatory**
Bonus marks will be granted exclusively to students possessing a valid certificate attesting to their participation or achievement in recognized competitions. This certificate must have been issued by January 31st of the examination year. According to Board officials, students appearing for compartment examinations will not be eligible to avail themselves of the benefits of this scheme.
**How Extra Marks Will Be Added to Results**
For High School (Class 10) students, the bonus marks will be displayed separately on their marksheet-cum-certificate. Conversely, for Intermediate (Class 12) students, these marks will be added to their total aggregate score. If a student fails the examination, these bonus marks may also be utilized as grace marks to help them pass in up to two subjects.
**Benefit Based on a Single Certificate**
If a student possesses multiple certificates, only the certificate yielding the maximum benefit will be taken into consideration. Board Secretary Bhagwati Singh stated that the new system would be implemented following the state government's approval. This scheme will also apply to students participating in sports activities under the aegis of the SGFI, NCC, and Scouts & Guides, as well as those involved in sports during Class 9 and Class 11.
