A loco pilot's primary duty is to safely and punctually transport trains from one place to another. Meanwhile, controlling the train while strictly following regulations is a major responsibility for the loco pilot. A loco pilot's duty typically lasts 8 to 10 hours.

Recruitment for loco pilots is conducted through an examination conducted by the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) of the Indian Railways. The minimum educational qualifications required are matriculation (10th grade pass) and an ITI from a recognized institute. This exam is conducted in three stages. The first stage is CBT-1 (Computer-Based Test-1). It includes questions related to mathematics, reasoning, and current affairs. The second stage is CBT-2. It asks questions related to ITI trades.
The third stage is CBAT (Computer-Based Aptitude Test). This tests the candidate's mental and technical abilities. After passing these exams, candidates must undergo a medical test and document verification, after which they are selected as Assistant Loco Pilots.

Parameshwar further explained that the starting salary of an Assistant Loco Pilot is approximately 30,000 to 40,000 rupees per month, based on the 19th grade pay. The Railways also provides various other perks and benefits, including various allowances.

Advising students preparing for the Loco Pilot exam, Parmeshwara said that students should first practice solving the math questions in the first stage of the exam on time. After this, they should thoroughly practice reasoning and general knowledge (GK) questions.
