JEE Main 2026 CBT Guide. As soon as the JEE Main 2026 admit cards are released, candidates' entire focus shifts to final preparation for the exam. But did you know that your year-long hard work depends not only on knowledge but also on your ability to handle the computer screen? For candidates taking the NTA Computer-Based Test (CBT) for the first time, the on-screen buttons and timer are no less challenging. Even a small technical error can knock you out of the race.

The online exam environment is completely different from the pen-and-paper mode. In the JEE Main 2026 online paper, you will have to adapt to the changing colors of the Question Palette, the ticking screen options like the Countdown Timer, and Mark for Review. Even many top students, under pressure, make mistakes using these buttons. Learn 5 effective tips that will prove to be a game-changer for JEE Main candidates taking the online exam for the first time.

Understand the Colors of the Question Palette
The Question Palette, visible on the right side of the computer screen, indicates the status of questions.

White: You haven't seen the question yet.
Red: You've seen the question but haven't answered it.
Green: You've answered, and it's been saved.
Purple: You've marked the question for review.
Green with purple: You've answered but have also saved it for review (this answer will be considered for evaluation).

Save and Next vs. Mark for Review

Some candidates make a common mistake in JEE Main or other similar online exams: forgetting to press the Save and Next button after selecting an answer. Remember, if you've selected an option but haven't clicked Save and Next, the answer won't be recorded. Use Mark for Review when you're half-assed about the answer. This allows you to return to those questions at the end without having to search for them.

Keep a close eye on the screen timer.
A 'Countdown Timer' runs on the top right of the computer screen. This indicates how much time is left before the end of the JEE Main exam. As soon as the time reaches zero, your test will automatically be submitted. You do not need to submit it manually. JEE Main 2026 candidates are advised to check the timer every hour. This will prevent last-minute panic.

Navigation and Jumping to Questions
The biggest advantage of CBT is that you can jump to any question at any time. If you find Physics difficult, you can click directly to the Chemistry or Math section. It is not mandatory to solve the question paper in order. Start with the section that is your strongest. If a question is too long or difficult, move on to the next question instead of wasting time on it.

5. Handling Numerical Value Questions (Section B)
Section B in JEE Main contains numerical-based questions that require typing. Use the mouse to enter answers using the Virtual Numeric Keypad. Note that there is usually no negative marking (check the latest NTA rules). Therefore, instead of skipping these questions, try to solve them accurately.
