A significant shift is on the horizon for international travelers from Mumbai. Starting in February 2027, IndiGo will launch international flights from the Navi Mumbai Airport, with many existing international services from the current Mumbai airport gradually being relocated there.

A major change is coming for passengers traveling abroad from Mumbai. From February 2027, IndiGo will begin international operations from the Navi Mumbai International Airport. As part of this transition, several of IndiGo’s international flights currently operating out of Mumbai’s existing airport will be progressively shifted to Navi Mumbai. Air India has also indicated plans to expand its operations at the Navi Mumbai Airport.

Flights to 12 International Destinations

IndiGo currently operates 12 daily international flights from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. These will be gradually moved to the Navi Mumbai Airport. The destinations include cities such as Bahrain, Riyadh, Dammam, Jeddah, Medina, Kuwait, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Muscat, Dhaka, and Jakarta.

Additionally, IndiGo will launch a new daily flight from Navi Mumbai to Kathmandu. Consequently, the airline plans to operate flights to 12 international destinations from Navi Mumbai between February and July 2027.

Domestic Flights Also to be Shifted

To ensure a seamless experience for passengers catching international flights from Navi Mumbai, IndiGo will also relocate some domestic flights to the airport. This will allow travelers arriving from other cities to land at the Navi Mumbai Airport and conveniently connect to their international flights. Provisions will be made at the airport to facilitate connections between domestic and international services.

Air India to Also Expand Operations

Following IndiGo’s lead, Air India has also announced plans to gradually expand its operations at the Navi Mumbai Airport. However, specific details—such as which of Air India’s flights will be relocated and the exact timeline for these changes—have not yet been disclosed.

Why are flights being shifted?

There is a plan to redevelop Mumbai’s old Terminal 1. The terminal is approximately 60 years old, and the reconstruction of its northern section is scheduled to begin in January 2027. During the construction phase, space for flight operations at Mumbai Airport may become limited. Consequently, plans have been made to shift some flights to the Navi Mumbai Airport. Initially, there was a proposal to shift certain international flights starting October 25, 2026, but this change was subsequently deferred.

When did the Navi Mumbai Airport begin operations?

IndiGo operated the first commercial flight from the Navi Mumbai International Airport on December 25, 2025. Currently, the airport primarily handles domestic flights. The commencement of international flights will further expand the role of this airport.

How will this affect passengers?

From February 2027 onwards, passengers traveling abroad with IndiGo must carefully check the airport name when booking their tickets. Their flight might depart from Navi Mumbai instead of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Therefore, it is essential to verify your ticket, messages from the airline, and flight details before your journey to avoid the inconvenience of arriving at the wrong airport.
