In Delhi, the salary of guest teachers will be doubled; PGTs will receive a monthly remuneration of Rs 76,160..
The Delhi government is set to provide a major boost to over 20,000 guest teachers who have been teaching in Delhi’s government schools for decades, with a plan to double their salaries. The Directorate of Education has prepared a proposal to this effect and submitted it to the Delhi government for approval. It is expected that the government will grant approval soon, following which the guest teachers will receive their increased salaries starting in November. This salary hike will apply to PGT (Post Graduate Teacher), TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher), and PRT (Primary Teacher) guest teachers.
Let us examine the matter in detail—specifically, what the proposed new salary structure for guest teachers in Delhi looks like, and what the guest teachers themselves have to say about it.
**Shift from daily remuneration to a monthly honorarium, with the addition of DA**
Currently, guest teachers in Delhi are paid on a daily basis; their salary is calculated according to the number of days they are present in a month, at a rate of ₹1,000 per day. Under the new system, the plan is to transition to a monthly honorarium. This monthly amount will be determined based on a basic salary plus a Dearness Allowance (DA). The proposal prepared by the Directorate of Education includes a DA component of 60%, though this rate may be subject to periodic revisions.
**What will the monthly honorarium be?**
The Directorate of Education has drafted a proposal to increase the remuneration for guest teachers, outlining the revised monthly pay for PGT, TGT, and PRT guest teachers. This draft has been submitted to the government for approval. Let us look at the proposed monthly honorarium for each category. PGT – ₹76,160 per month
TGT – ₹71,840 per month
PRT – ₹56,640 per month
Guest teachers will remain on a contractual basis; 8 days of leave per year
According to the proposal prepared by the Directorate of Education, guest teachers will not gain the right to be regularized; their employment status will remain contractual. The proposal includes a provision for eight days of casual leave annually for guest teachers. It is also clarified that any absence beyond the allotted leave will result in a pro-rata daily deduction from their monthly honorarium.
Honorarium to be paid during vacations as well
The Directorate of Education’s proposal specifies that guest teachers will now receive their designated monthly honorarium even during summer and winter vacations. If guest teachers are called in during these breaks for tasks such as the admission process or conducting extra classes, they will receive additional payment.
Guest teachers welcome the proposal
Guest teachers have welcomed the proposal from the Directorate of Education. Shoaib Rana, an office-bearer of the Guest Teachers Association, stated that for the past 8–9 years, guest teachers had been demanding a salary increase and the fixation of their pay. With inflation steadily rising and no salary hikes provided, sustaining a livelihood had become increasingly difficult for them. In this context, the Directorate of Education’s initiative to increase and fix the salaries of guest teachers is commendable, and the guest teachers are grateful to the Education Department for this.
Shoaib has urged the Delhi government to approve this proposal as soon as possible, thereby fulfilling a long-standing demand of the guest teachers. He noted that this would provide significant relief, ensuring they receive a respectable salary and are able to lead a dignified life.
