Improvement in School Education: Student-Teacher Ratio Improves Over 12 Years

Pupil-Teacher Ratio: According to data released by the Ministry of Education, the number of students per teacher has decreased across levels ranging from primary to higher secondary compared to the past.

Pupil-Teacher Ratio: Significant improvements have been observed in the country's school system over the last 12 years. Notably, data on the pupil-teacher ratio released by the Ministry of Education shows a marked improvement. The figures indicate that the number of students per teacher has dropped across all levels—from primary to higher secondary—compared to earlier years. The Ministry states that this will allow teachers to devote more attention to each student and will enhance the quality of education.

Student-Teacher Ratio Decreases Across All Four Levels

According to the Ministry of Education's data, the student-teacher ratio has improved across all school levels in 2025-26 compared to 2013-14. At the primary level, the ratio shifted from one teacher for every 31 students in 2013-14 to one teacher for every 19 students in 2025-26. Similarly, at the upper primary level, the number of students per teacher fell from 25 in 2013-14 to 17 in 2025-26. At the secondary level, the figure dropped from 25 students per teacher in 2013-14 to 15 in 2025-26. Meanwhile, at the higher secondary level, the figure decreased from 40 students per teacher in 2013-14 to 23 in 2025-26.

According to the Ministry of Education, the improvement in the student-teacher ratio over the past 12 years has enabled each student to receive more personalized guidance. This has helped strengthen the teaching process and fostered a better learning environment within the classroom.

Improvement Visible in States Too

Beyond the data provided by the Union Ministry of Education, several states have also taken steps to improve the teacher-student ratio in government schools. For instance, Andhra Pradesh has recorded improvements in the teacher-student ratio at the primary, upper primary, and high school levels over the past decade. Continuous efforts are being made to increase the number of teachers and fill vacancies in schools, ensuring a better teaching-learning environment for all students. According to the latest socio-economic survey report released by the Andhra Pradesh government, the teacher-student ratio in primary schools stood at 1:26 during the 2014-15 academic year and improved to 1:20 by the 2024-25 academic year—meaning there is now one teacher for every 20 students.
