Impact of the New Education Policy: Can JEE and NEET be cracked without coaching?

Entrance exams like JEE and NEET are a dream for millions of students in India. These exams are essential for admission to prestigious fields like engineering and medicine. However, the difficulty and competition of these exams are so high that most students resort to expensive coaching classes to prepare for them. Gradually, coaching has become a necessity rather than an option. The increasing reliance on coaching has also led to many problems, such as mental stress, family pressure, suicide cases, arson incidents, and the disorganization of coaching institutes.

In light of this situation, the government has taken a significant step. The central government is now reviewing the difficulty level of exams like JEE and NEET. The aim is to ensure that these exams are in accordance with Class 12 standards and that students can pass them solely through school studies, without coaching.

What is the government's new plan?

The government has formed an expert committee to assess the difficulty level of entrance exams like JEE and NEET and to determine whether they align with the Class 12 syllabus. This committee was formed in June 2025. The committee includes experts from several major educational institutions and school representatives. It is headed by Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi.

Why is this review necessary?

In the past few years, it has been observed that most students have become dependent on coaching for JEE and NEET. The burden and pressure of coaching institutes is affecting students' mental health. Serious cases of suicide have also been reported, especially in cities like Kota. Dummy schools, or formal schools established solely for coaching, are hindering students' overall development. This entire step is linked to the thinking of the new education policy, which aims to make education understanding-based, bring out the talent of every student, and inspire them to think creatively and practically.
