IIT Kharagpur Admissions 2026: The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) has started the admission process for its specialized Law and Public Policy programs for the 2026 academic year. This time, the institute is accepting online applications for the LLB (Honours in Intellectual Property Law), LLM, and Master's in Public Policy, Law and Governance (MPPLG) courses.

According to the official IIT Kharagpur website, applications for all courses began on December 15, 2025, and the last date to apply is February 20, 2026. Complete admission details and the online application form are available on the institute's website.

IIT Kharagpur's three-year full-time LLB (Honours) program is for students who have graduated in engineering, technology, science, medicine, or related fields and now wish to pursue a career in law. This course specifically focuses on legal issues related to intellectual property and technology.

Candidates eligible to apply for the LLB course must possess a first-class bachelor's degree in engineering, technology, or medicine, or a first-class master's degree in science/pharmacy. Candidates with relevant qualifications, along with an MBA, are also eligible to apply. Where a first-class degree is not specified, a minimum of 60% marks or a 6.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale is required. Final-year students are also eligible to apply.

LLB Entrance Exam and Fees
Admission to the LLB program requires candidates to take a computer-based test conducted by IIT Kharagpur. This two-hour online exam will include questions on mathematical aptitude, science, English, logical reasoning, legal aptitude, and current affairs. Importantly, there will be no negative marking. The exam will be conducted in Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, and Kolkata. The application fee is Rs 3,000 for male candidates from the General and OBC categories, while it is Rs 1,500 for female, transgender, SC, ST, PWD, and EWS categories.

Career Opportunity in Public Policy and Governance
IIT Kharagpur has also opened applications for its two-year full-time Master's in Public Policy, Law and Governance (MPPLG) program. This course is offered under the Centre of Excellence in Public Policy, Law and Governance. It aims to provide students with a deep understanding of public policy, law, and governance systems so that they can work in government, industry, civil society, international organizations, or academia.

Eligibility for this course requires a minimum four-year Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Commerce, or Arts. A minimum of 65% marks or 7 CGPA is required for General, OBC, and EWS categories, while 60% or 6.5 CGPA is required for SC, ST, and PWD candidates. There is also an age limit: 30 years for the General category and 35 years for reserved categories, although working professionals may be granted exemptions as per the rules. Female candidates and those with work experience will be given preference.

MPPLG Selection Process in Two Steps
Admission to the MPPLG course will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will be a computer-based examination with questions on English, Quantitative Aptitude, Current Affairs, and Logical Reasoning. Shortlisted candidates will then undergo a group discussion and personal interview. This examination will also be conducted in Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, and Kolkata. The application fee is non-refundable, similar to the LLB program.
