IIT Kanpur has made mental health checkups mandatory for new students following two recent suicides on campus. Read on for full details.

IIT Kanpur has taken a significant step regarding the mental health of its students. After two student suicides in less than a month, all new students will now undergo a mental health screening during their first week on campus. The aim is to identify stress, depression, or other mental health issues early on and provide students with the necessary support.

Between December and January, a PhD student and a final-year undergraduate student died by suicide at IIT Kanpur. These incidents raised concerns for both the institution and the Ministry of Education. It was then decided that mental health would be addressed at an early stage to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Mandatory Mental Health Screening for New Students

Now, every new student joining IIT Kanpur will undergo a mental health screening during their first week on campus. This screening will be conducted professionally to ensure that no student feels uncomfortable.

Immediate Support for At-Risk Students

Students identified as being at moderate or high risk during the screening will be contacted directly by trained counselors. If needed, a detailed assessment will be conducted, and they may be referred to a psychiatrist for timely treatment and support.

Creating a Supportive Environment on Campus

IIT Kanpur is not limiting itself to just screenings but is also working to create a mentally safe environment across the entire campus. Regular mental health awareness workshops are being conducted for faculty, students, and staff.

Ministry of Education's Three-Member Committee

The Ministry of Education has formed a three-member committee to review the incidents at IIT Kanpur. This committee is chaired by Professor Anil D. Sahasrabudhe and includes a senior psychiatrist and an official from the Department of Higher Education. The committee will investigate whether IIT Kanpur is properly following government guidelines related to mental health. It will also examine the causes of the recent incidents, identify systemic shortcomings, and suggest measures to prevent future suicides. The committee must submit its report within 15 days.

Training Beyond the Classroom

Training on mental health is not limited to students. It also includes security guards, medical staff, and library and mess hall employees, so that everyone can recognize the early signs of distress and provide timely assistance.

24/7 Mental Health Emergency System

The campus now has a 24-hour emergency mental health support system. The Mental Health and Well-being Centre and the Campus Health Centre work together to provide immediate assistance in any emergency.

At IIT Kanpur, senior students are now acting as mentors for junior students. This reduces feelings of isolation among new students and provides them with a reliable support system. Mental health-related programs, festivals, and sports activities are also organized throughout the year. IIT Kanpur states that students' mental and emotional well-being is just as important as their academic performance. The institute is encouraging students to prioritize their own well-being and seek help when needed.
