IIT Kanpur: IIT Kanpur is set to become the first IIT in the country to offer medical education—including MBBS and PhD programs—alongside its engineering curriculum.
IIT Kanpur: As one of the nation’s premier technical institutions, IIT Kanpur is poised to make history. It is set to become the first IIT in the country to provide medical education, encompassing both MBBS and PhD programs, alongside its engineering offerings. Speaking to the media on the occasion of the institute’s 67th Foundation Day, Director Prof. Manindra Agrawal shared details regarding future plans and achievements. He announced that a 450-bed super-specialty hospital on the IIT Kanpur campus will become operational by April 2027. Following this, the institute plans to commence the admission process for MBBS and PhD programs starting from the 2029 academic session.
Hospital to Open in April 2027
The super-specialty hospital, being constructed on the IIT Kanpur campus under the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, is nearing completion. According to the Director, while construction was slightly delayed due to heavy rainfall and disputes among the construction firms, the facility is now set to be inaugurated in April 2027, at which point it will begin providing services to patients. Once operational, the hospital will spare patients from Kanpur and approximately 10 surrounding districts the need to travel to major metropolitan cities like Delhi or Mumbai for the treatment of serious illnesses.
Courses to Begin in 2029
Clinical courses at IIT Kanpur are scheduled to commence in 2029. Notably, however, the institute will begin offering MTech and PhD programs in non-clinical medical fields and medical engineering as early as the 2027 academic session.

'U-Hubs' to be established in Noida and Lucknow
To promote startups in the 'deep-tech' sector within Uttar Pradesh, the government is set to establish 'U-Hubs.' Under this initiative, two such centers are being set up in the state: the first will be located at the Noida campus of IIT Kanpur, and the second at IIIT Lucknow. Both centers are expected to be inaugurated by the end of this month. Their primary objective is to provide essential facilities and incentives to new startups operating in the deep-tech sector.
