A new opportunity in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging for engineering students. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) BHU is preparing to launch a four-year B.Tech program in 'Physical AI,' starting from the 2027-28 academic year. A proposal to establish a 'School of Physical AI' at the institute has already been approved.

The curriculum will cover robotics, sensor technology, machine control, and the practical application of AI. This field offers career prospects in sectors such as industrial production, agriculture, healthcare, and space research.

New B.Tech Course to Begin in 2027-28
Work has commenced toward introducing the Physical AI program at IIT BHU. On October 17, the institute's Senate approved the proposal to establish the School of Physical AI. An eight-member coordination committee, led by Director Prof. Amit Patra, has been formed to oversee the establishment and operation of the school. Prof. Rajesh Kumar will serve as the Vice-Chairperson of this committee.

Assembling a Faculty Team
A team of educators is also being assembled for this new school. Faculty members from the institute are visiting centers in countries like Poland and South Korea to develop a robust academic framework in this field.

What is Physical AI?
Physical AI is a form of artificial intelligence that integrates computer-based technology with real-world machines and devices. By utilizing technologies such as robots, sensors, cameras, and motors, it enables machines to perceive their surrounding environment and operate accordingly. While conventional AI primarily deals with digital information, Physical AI is used to make machines that operate in the physical world 'smarter.'

Emphasis on Robotics and Machine Control in the Curriculum
Expert committees are currently working on developing the curriculum for the four-year B.Tech program. It will encompass robotics, autonomous systems, sensor-based technology, machine control, and the practical application of AI. Students will not be limited to programming alone; they will also gain experience in the design, construction, and testing of machines, as well as in solving real-world problems.

Career Opportunities Across Various Sectors
Studying Physical AI can open up career prospects for students in a wide range of fields, including robotics engineering, smart manufacturing, industrial automation, agricultural technology, healthcare, and space research. However, job opportunities will depend on the students' individual skills, expertise, and the specific demands of the industry.

The Fifth School at IIT BHU
The School of Physical AI will be the fifth school to be established at IIT BHU. Previously, the institute has set up schools focused on Biomedical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Decision Science, and Material Science. Meanwhile, IIT Kharagpur also announced the establishment of the Benjamin Gupta School of Physical AI on October 26, with an allocated budget of ₹35 crore.
