IISc Brings Honor to India: Ranked as the Country's Top Institution in World University Rankings

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, has secured the top spot among all institutions in the country in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027. IISc has achieved a global rank of 254 this year.

A premier higher education institution in India, IISc Bengaluru has claimed the number one position among Indian institutions in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027. While the institute previously fell within the 201–250 band, this year it has been assigned a specific global rank of 254 for the first time. The 2027 rankings feature 2,297 universities from 118 countries and regions worldwide. A significant highlight for India is that 143 of its universities have made it to the list—an increase of 15 compared to the previous year. For the second consecutive year, India has also emerged as the country with the highest number of ranked universities in Asia.

IISc achieved an overall score of 57.0 in the rankings. The institute's strongest performance was in the 'Research Environment' category, where it scored 98.0 points. It also recorded scores of 62.1 in 'Teaching' and 58.6 in 'Research Quality'. Universities are evaluated in these rankings based on various parameters, including teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry engagement.

Following IISc, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences secured the second position among Indian institutions, placing in the 326–350 global band. Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences followed, ranking in the 451–500 band. Meanwhile, both Jamia Millia Islamia and KIIT University secured a place in the 501-550 band. Changes in rankings were observed for some institutions compared to last year; Saveetha improved from the 351-400 band to the 326-350 band, while KIIT moved from the 601-800 band to the 501-550 band. Conversely, Jamia shifted from the 401-500 band last year to the 501-550 band this year.

A significant shift in the World University Rankings 2027 concerns Asia's performance. According to the report, for the first time, the number of ranked universities in Asia has surpassed that of Europe. This year, 1,003 Asian universities were included in the rankings, up from 929 last year.

Additionally, 40 Asian universities feature in the global top 200, an increase of five compared to the previous year. China's Tsinghua University rose to the 11th spot, becoming the highest-ranked university in Asia. Peking University holds the 13th position, and the National University of Singapore is among the top 15. Furthermore, Japan's University of Tokyo is ranked 27th, the University of Hong Kong is 33rd, and South Korea's Seoul National University is 56th.

Globally, the University of Oxford has retained the top spot for the 11th consecutive year. MIT holds the second position, while Princeton University and Stanford University are tied for third place. The University of Cambridge secured the fifth position.
