IISc Bengaluru Deep Learning AI Course: The Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru (IISc Bengaluru) is offering a free online course on deep learning in collaboration with SWAYAM, and registrations are currently open. The course, 'Foundations of Deep Learning: Concepts and Applications,' is designed for undergraduate and postgraduate students with no prior background in the subject. It begins with basic questions often asked by newcomers—such as the difference between machine learning and deep learning—and gradually progresses to advanced topics such as gradient descent (GD), backpropagation (MSE), and convolutional neural networks (CNNs), with weekly hands-on exercises.

The course will run for three months, from January 19th to April 10th, 2026. It will be taught by Professor Sriram Ganapathy, Professor Ashwini Kodipalli, and Professor Baishali Garai from IISc, Bangalore. Although prior knowledge of the subject is not required for this course, a basic understanding of Python programming is essential to better understand the concepts.

What does this course cover?

– History and evolution of deep learning with computational efficiency
– Fundamentals of image representation, image preprocessing, and data augmentation
– Practical on building a simple CNN model for binary and multiclass classification

– Practical on transfer learning and building an ensemble model
– Introduction to XAI: algorithms and how they work
– Evaluation metrics for segmentation, CNN-based segmentation algorithms: UNet
– Introduction to the long-short-term memory (LSTM) architecture and its need, bidirectional LSTMs, stacked LSTMs
– Transformer architecture, large language models

Course Certificate
Learners wishing to earn a certificate must register for the exam on April 25, 2026, which will be held in two sessions: 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The exam fee is ₹1,000 and will be a proctored, in-person test at a designated exam center.
