IGNOU PhD Admission Process Begins; Applications Open for 36 Subjects Until July 1
IGNOU has initiated the PhD admission process for 36 subjects for the July 2026 session. Candidates can apply online until July 1. An interview will be a mandatory part of the selection process.
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched the admission process for PhD programs for the July 2026 session. Interested and eligible candidates can apply online from June 10 to July 1, 2026. The university has commenced the application process via its official admission website. Candidates can apply by filling out the application form within the stipulated timeframe.
IGNOU is offering admission to PhD programs in a total of 36 subjects this session. These include Psychology, Anthropology, Political Science, Public Administration, Biochemistry, Chemistry, and several others. Through these courses, students will be able to conduct research work in various fields.
The university has clarified that the admission process will be conducted in accordance with the University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations of 2022. Under these guidelines, candidates will have the opportunity to seek admission through various categories.
Candidates can apply for PhD admission under four distinct categories. These include candidates who have qualified for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) alongside UGC-NET; Assistant Professors and UGC-NET candidates eligible for PhD admission; UGC-NET candidates eligible solely for PhD admission; and candidates applying through the university-level entrance examination.
Direct Interview Opportunity
According to IGNOU, all candidates are required to participate in an interview or viva-voce as part of the admission process. However, candidates who have already qualified for the JRF or UGC-NET examination are exempt from the entrance test. Such candidates will be directly shortlisted for the interview stage. According to information released by the university, the PhD programs will be available in both full-time and part-time modes. This will provide an opportunity for working professionals and other busy candidates to pursue research work.
Mandatory Requirement
Selected candidates will be required to complete the prescribed coursework at the IGNOU headquarters in New Delhi. The university has also clarified that maintaining a minimum attendance of 80 percent during the coursework is mandatory for research scholars. Students who fail to meet the attendance requirement may face difficulties in the subsequent stages of the process.
Online Application Process
The application process will be entirely online. To apply, candidates must first register on the admission portal. Following registration, they will need to fill out the application form, upload the necessary documents, and pay the application fee.
Application Fee
The application fee for the PhD programs has been set at ₹2,000. The fee can be paid online. Candidates are advised to carefully verify all details before submitting their applications.
