If the work is found satisfactory, the candidate is upgraded to the Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) and begins receiving a monthly fellowship of ₹42,000 for the following year.

In addition, researchers receive a contingency grant. Students in the humanities and social sciences are granted ₹10,000 annually during the JRF period and ₹20,500 annually during the SRF period. Meanwhile, researchers in science subjects receive ₹12,000 annually during the JRF phase and ₹25,000 annually during the SRF phase for research purposes.
