Many students dream of becoming Chartered Accountants (CAs) after completing Class 12, but before starting their studies, the biggest question on their minds is: what is the total cost involved in becoming a CA? Do they only have to pay the institute's fees, or are there separate costs for exams and coaching? To find the answers to these questions, we spoke with CA Abhishek Mishra from Patna.

He explained that to become a CA, a student must start at the Foundation level after Class 12. This is followed by the Intermediate level and then the Final level. In other words, the CA course can be understood as comprising three main stages. The institute's registration fee varies for each stage. Additionally, costs for exam forms, mandatory training, and coaching can vary.

**CA Studies Begin with the Foundation Course**
After Class 12, students can enroll in the CA Foundation course. At this level, the registration fee for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is around ₹10,000. Apart from this, a separate fee must be paid for the exam form at the time of the examination. However, coaching is not mandatory for Foundation preparation. Depending on their needs and budget, students can opt for classes provided by the institute or study through private coaching centers and tutors.

If a student opts for private coaching, the fees are not uniform. Fees for online and offline classes can differ. Similarly, there may be a difference in costs depending on whether one takes coaching in a major city or metropolis versus a smaller town.

**Costs Increase at the Intermediate Level**
After passing the Foundation exam, the student registers for the CA Intermediate course. The Intermediate level consists of two groups. The institute's registration fee for both groups is approximately ₹20,000. Subsequently, a separate exam fee must be paid when appearing for the examination.

At the Intermediate level too, coaching costs depend on the student's choice. Classes provided by the institute may be less expensive, whereas private coaching fees can vary based on the online or offline mode of instruction.

**What Are the Fees at the Final Level?** The final stage of the CA course—the 'Final' level—also consists of two groups. The Institute's registration fee for both these groups is approximately ₹25,000. At the Final level, too, the examination fee must be paid separately when filling out the exam form. Additionally, students can choose between the Institute's classes or private coaching for their preparation.

**It’s Not Just About the Fees for the Three Levels**
The cost of pursuing CA involves more than just the registration fees for the Foundation, Intermediate, and Final levels. There are also mandatory programs and training sessions at various stages. These may include computer-related courses and other compulsory training. These programs have their own fees, which the student must pay at the respective stage. Therefore, it is important to consider these expenses when estimating the total cost of the CA course.

**Can the Course Be Completed for Around ₹2 Lakh?**
If a student studies primarily through the Institute—the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI)—and avoids expensive external coaching, the total cost of the CA course can remain around ₹2 lakh. However, this is merely an estimate. If a student opts for private coaching institutes and private tutors, the cost can rise significantly—in some cases, it could even double.

**Expenses Depend on Several Factors**
The final cost will vary based on factors such as the mode of study (online vs. offline), the city, the choice of subject or group coaching, and the facilities selected by the student. Therefore, students starting their CA preparation should not base their budget solely on the Institute's registration fees. It is advisable to prepare a budget that accounts for other study-related expenses, including examination fees, mandatory training, and coaching costs.
