How many phases does the UPSC exam have?

The UPSC Civil Services Examination is conducted in three stages. The Prelims consist of objective-type questions. The Mains have 9 papers, of which 7 papers are counted for merit. The final round is the interview and personality test, after which the selection is made.

UPSC Prelims Cut-off

The cut-off marks for the Prelims exam vary every year for different categories. For example, in 2024, the cut-off for General category candidates was 87.98 marks, while for OBC it was 87.28 marks, for SC it was 79.03 marks, and for ST it was 74.23 marks. For the EWS category, it was 85.92 marks, and for the PWD category, it was 69.42 marks for PWD 1, 65.30 marks for PWD 2, and approximately 40 marks for PWD 3 and PWD 5. The Prelims are only for qualifying purposes. The merit list is based on the Mains and Interview scores.

UPSC Mains Cut-off

The Mains exam is for a total of 1,750 marks. Candidates need to score the minimum cut-off marks in the Mains to be selected for the interview. In 2024, the cut-off for General category candidates was 729 marks. For OBC, it was 702 marks, for SC it was 685 marks, and for ST it was 684 marks. Additionally, the cut-off marks for EWS were 696, and for the PWD category, the cut-off marks were 663 for PWD 1, 696 for PWD 2, 307 for PWD 3, and 361 for PWD 5. Only those who scored around these marks in the Mains exam are called for the interview.

How is the UPSC final merit list prepared?

The UPSC final merit list, which determines who passes the UPSC exam, is based on a total of 2,025 marks from the Mains and interview stages. In 2024, candidates in the General category were selected with 947 marks. The cut-off marks were 910 for OBC, 880 for SC, 884 for ST, and 917 for the EWS category.
