Good news for UP teachers before Diwali: Over 70,000 set for promotion
Promotions for teachers in council-run primary and upper primary schools have been stalled for a long time. Due to the lack of promotions since 2016, a large number of teachers have remained in the same position.
There is good news for thousands of teachers working in Uttar Pradesh's council-run schools. Preparations are underway to promote approximately 70,000 teachers from primary and upper primary schools. Promotions for these teachers had been on hold since 2016. Moving the process forward, the Basic Education Council has instructed Basic Education Officers (BSAs) across all districts to prepare seniority lists. In accordance with the Council's established procedure, lists based on teacher seniority will be prepared in each district. Subsequently, the promotion process for eligible teachers will proceed. Districts are required to submit these lists to the Basic Education Council's office by October 23, 2026. Plans are in place to commence the promotion process in November.
Promotions for teachers in council-run primary and upper primary schools have been stalled for a long time. Due to the lack of promotions since 2016, a large number of teachers have remained in the same position. Now, out of approximately 3.30 lakh council teachers, around 70,000 are expected to benefit from promotions. Surendra Kumar Tiwari, Secretary of the Basic Education Council, has directed BSAs in all districts to prepare seniority lists. Officials must complete this task within approximately three weeks. Once prepared, the lists will be sent to the Council's office, serving as the basis for the subsequent stages of the process.
To which posts will promotions be made?
In council-run primary schools, Assistant Teachers may be promoted to the post of Headmaster in a primary school or Assistant Teacher in an upper primary school. Similarly, Primary School Headmasters and Assistant Teachers from upper primary schools are promoted to the post of Headmaster in upper primary schools. Sanctioned headmaster posts in schools serve as the basis for these promotions. Under the Right to Education Act, one headmaster post is sanctioned for every 150 students in primary schools, while one is sanctioned for every 100 students in upper primary schools.
Process to Advance After October 23
The process regarding teacher eligibility and promotion will move forward once the seniority lists are received from the districts. Currently, the Council has tasked the districts with preparing these lists, with a deadline of October 3 for their submission. Preparations are underway to initiate the promotion process in November. Teachers' associations have also been demanding these promotions for a long time.
