Good news for Agniveers: Tenure of service in the Army may be extended by 2 years..
Agniveer 2-Year Extension Plan: A major change may be in the offing for the ‘Agnipath Scheme,’ launched in 2022 for recruitment into the Indian Armed Forces. The government is considering a plan to offer Agniveers a 2-year service extension beyond their initial 4-year tenure. The first batch of Indian Navy Agniveers is set to complete its 4-year service term on November 21. It is expected that this extension plan will be announced before the retirement of this first batch.
Under current rules, 25% of Agniveers are absorbed into the regular cadre upon completing their 4-year term, while the remaining 75% are discharged from service. If the new proposal is implemented, a portion of those 75% who would otherwise be discharged will be given the option to serve the nation for an additional 2 years. According to a report by Navbharat Times, if this proposal is approved, there will be three categories of personnel within the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force: regular Agniveers, Agniveers with an extension, and permanent soldiers.
When will the tenure of the first batch of Agniveers conclude?
The countdown to the completion of the 4-year service term for the first batch of Agniveers has begun:
Indian Navy: The tenure of the first batch of Navy Agniveers concludes on November 21.
Indian Air Force: The first batch of the Air Force will complete its service on December 21.
Indian Army: The first batch of Army Agniveers will complete its 4-year tenure on December 31.
What will change with the 2-year extension?
If the government approves a 2-year extension plan, the primary benefits would be enhanced career stability for the personnel and an increase in the military’s pool of experienced manpower:
Benefit of Experience: After 4 years of training, personnel become seasoned in military operations. An additional 2 years would provide the armed forces with a more experienced workforce.
Increased Salary: In the fourth year, an Agniveer’s total package is ₹40,000 (with ₹28,000 in-hand). During the 5th and 6th years of an extension, the salary and allowances of these personnel could approach those of regular soldiers.
More Time for Future Careers: An extra 2 years would allow personnel—by the age of 23–24—more time to prepare for resettlement, civil services, or roles in paramilitary forces.
Current Rules and 'Seva Nidhi' Package under the Agniveer Scheme
The Ministry of Defence launched the Agniveer scheme on June 14, 2022.
Under the current system:
'Seva Nidhi' Package: Upon completing 4 years of service, an Agniveer receives a lump-sum amount of approximately ₹11.71 lakh (including interest), which is tax-free.
Insurance and Skills: During their service, personnel are covered by a non-contributory life insurance policy of ₹48 lakh, and upon discharge, they are provided with a 'skill certificate.' However, they are not eligible for a pension or gratuity.
