Girls from class 6 to 12 will have to wear overcoats in government schools. The Puducherry government has issued instructions to girls to wear 'overcoats' in schools. Deputy Director of Elementary Education C. Gavari said in a circular that the Director of School Education has approved the proposal to wear overcoats for girls from class 6 to 12 in government schools.

Deputy Director C Gavari said in the circular that all school inspection officers have been asked to send the design of overcoats for girl students to the heads of the institutions under them and instruct the girl students studying from class 6 to 12 to wear overcoats as per the design.

An official source said that the decision to instruct girl students to wear overcoats has been taken to ensure their safety. However, no such order has been issued by the government regarding girl students of private schools.
