For the First Time, UP Board to Award Marks Based on 'Step Marking'; Answer Sheets to be Evaluated Starting March 18
The UP Board is set to commence the evaluation process for answer sheets on March 18, 2026. Approximately one crore (10 million) answer sheets will be scrutinized across 249 evaluation centers established throughout the state.
With the conclusion of the UP Board Class 10 and 12 examinations, lakhs of students are now eagerly awaiting their results. Amidst this, the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (Board of Secondary Education) has introduced a significant change regarding the evaluation process. This time, the Board has decided to implement a 'step marking' system for the first time to ensure transparency in the evaluation of answer sheets and to provide relief to students. Furthermore, the evaluation of answer sheets will be conducted digitally; this will not only minimize the scope for errors but also facilitate the earlier release of results. This decision by the Board is being hailed as a major relief for students—particularly for those who feel intimidated by lengthy questions and complex formulas in subjects such as Mathematics and Science. Under this new system, greater emphasis will be placed on acknowledging the students' effort, and the previous practice of deducting full marks solely on the basis of an incorrect final answer is being discontinued.
Evaluation to Begin on March 18
The UP Board will initiate the process of evaluating answer sheets on March 18, 2026. Approximately one crore answer sheets are scheduled to be evaluated across 249 designated centers located throughout the state. To facilitate this, the services of approximately 1.5 lakh (150,000) teachers have been enlisted. The Board aims to complete the entire evaluation process by the end of March or by the first week of April.
What is Step Marking?
Step marking is an evaluation system wherein marks are awarded for every correct step executed by a student while solving a problem. In other words, even if a student is unable to arrive at the completely correct final answer, but has correctly executed the initial stages or specific intermediate steps, they will be awarded marks corresponding to those correct steps. For instance, if a question carries a weightage of 5 marks and a student has correctly executed three of the required steps, they will be awarded 3 marks. This system will prove beneficial for students who may inadvertently commit a minor error during the final stage of solving a problem.
Answer Sheets to be Evaluated Digitally
This time, the UP Board has modernized the answer sheet evaluation process by making it high-tech. Answer booklets will be scanned and uploaded to a server, and teachers will evaluate them by logging in via computer screens. This digital system will eliminate issues such as errors in totaling marks or inadvertently missing an answer during the calculation process. Furthermore, the marks awarded by teachers will be saved directly into the Board's database, thereby reducing the time required to compile the results. Additionally, the Board has instructed teachers to adopt a lenient approach during evaluation and to award marks for every correct attempt made by students. Step marking has been implemented for Mathematics and Science subjects, whereas in language subjects, attention will be focused specifically on linguistic errors. Moreover, it will be ensured that answer sheets from English-medium students are evaluated exclusively by teachers qualified in the English language.
