FMGE December 2025: Students pursuing online BS degrees will also be eligible to take the FMGE exam; NMC has changed the criteria..
FMGE December 2025: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has clarified the eligibility criteria for the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). Students who have completed a Bachelor of Science (BS) course from foreign medical institutions, whether through online or physical mode, are now eligible to appear for this examination. It is important to note that this change applies to those who enrolled before the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations (FMGL) 2021 notification of November 18, 2021.
In a notification issued on December 7, the NMC stated that students who had enrolled in BS courses at foreign medical institutions before the FMGL notification would now be eligible to take the FMGE. Previously, the eligibility rules were limited to students who studied in offline mode only. The NMC clarified that students pursuing BS courses in foreign medical institutions, whether online or physically, must pass the FMGE to register for medical practice in India. This change aims to ensure that all students, regardless of their mode of study, have the opportunity to demonstrate their competence in medical knowledge and practice.
Internship Requirements
While the new eligibility criteria open doors for many students, they also come with additional internship requirements. BS course students who have received this one-time exemption will be required to complete an additional year of internship in India. In contrast, foreign medical graduates holding an MBBS or equivalent degree will be required to complete two years of internship. The NMC emphasized that these internship requirements are in line with existing regulations to ensure adequate clinical experience and maintain uniform standards of medical education and practice.
When will the FMGE exam be held?
The FMGE examination is scheduled for January 17, 2026, and will be conducted in 67 cities across India, providing a crucial opportunity for eligible students to enter the medical profession. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has already released the FMGE exam city slips for the upcoming session to ensure that all registered candidates receive information about their examination centers.
