Female students in UP to get free scooters; courses with low enrollment also included...
There is great news for meritorious female students pursuing higher education in Uttar Pradesh. The government is preparing to provide free scooters to top-performing female students studying in universities and degree colleges. Notably, female students in courses with low student enrollment will not be excluded from this scheme; if the top five percent of students in such a course amounts to fewer than one person, at least one of the most meritorious female students will still be awarded a scooter. To facilitate this, the Higher Education Department has sought the academic records of female students from all institutions.
**Benefits for the top five percent of female students**
Under the government scheme, female students demonstrating excellent performance across various courses in universities and degree colleges will be selected. Information is being sought regarding female students who have completed their graduation and secured more than 80 percent marks in the 2025-26 academic session. Additionally, data is being collected on female students in their second year of graduation who have secured over 80 percent marks or a CGPA higher than 8.
Information regarding female students who have achieved 85 percent or higher marks and a CGPA of 8.5 or above is also being submitted to the department. A list of meritorious female students will be prepared based on this data.
**Opportunity even in courses with low enrollment**
Student enrollment is low in certain courses, such as Bachelor of Vocational Studies and Fine Arts. Consequently, the number of students falling within the "top five percent" category might be less than one. In such instances, the government is preparing to award a scooter to at least one female student.
The Higher Education Department will verify the data received from the institutions. Work on uploading results to the portal and testing the system has already commenced.
**50,000 female students may receive scooters in the first phase**
The Higher Education Department reportedly has a budget of approximately ₹400 crore for this scheme. In the initial phase, around 50,000 meritorious female students are likely to receive scooters. If necessary, the government may increase the budget later to extend the scheme's benefits to more students.
